Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Max bike store -scam?

I recently found a great deal on a trek 2300 through a place in Montana called Max Bicycles
https://www.maxbicycle.com/ they also have a bunch of other great deals on 2005 model bikes. I am hesitant to buy anything from them (off the internet) beacause the payment details look sketchy now that I have looked into it more. Has anyone heard of or done any business with them?

Total and complete scam. These guys pop up periodically under different names. They even stole the Performance logo.

COMPLETE and TOTAL SCAM. Stay away.

I recognize the email addresses on that webpage. They're the same ones used on eBay auctions where bikes like Trek Madones and TTX's start at $99 with no reserve with a request to "contact the seller before bidding for a buy it now price" in the description.

The people running that site are thieves who specialize in phishing and ID theft. You WILL lose your money if you try to buy anything from them.

Whenever you know that something isn't real, you should report the site to the ISP. These guys are hosted by www.hostaway.com.

You should provide evidence when reporting so that the ISP knows you're not just some nut. Google's cache or the WayBack machine should be able to show that the pages haven't changed. If you know of a news clipping, that should be passed along to.

Most ISP's take allegations of criminal activity very seriously and shut down offenders quickly.

My dad lives in Helena. I just gave him a jingle, and indeed, they don't exist.

Maybe I'm being a bit too cynical. If you check out the customer testimonials at

https://ibexbikes.com/feedback_index.html
https://maxbicycle.com/customer.htm
and
https://downlen-bikes.ws43.com/customer.htm

you'll see they all get great reviews -- even by the same people. BTW, for those of you who want to report them, https://downen-bikes.ws43.com is hosted by https://isprime.com and https://maxbicycle.com/ is hosted by https://hostaway.com

Don't hack -- report!

I have provided the contact info for the ISP's the host Max bicycles and two other clones of the store. If I get some free time, I may go hunting for more because hosted sites are so cheap, there are probably quite a few.

Hacking is illegal, even when done with good intentions. Also, the most effective forms of attack would inevitably catch innocent people as well.

DO tell the ISP's, and provide evidence to show that you are trying to help people from getting scammed and don't just have a grudge.

Hahahaha! The vitobikes guy is back! This is the 3rd or 4th time he's resurfaced with that same cobbed-together page.

Actually, it appears that IBEX may be the victim of having their material stolen.

Check the testimonials. From IBEX:

"This is a really nice bike! I got it just as you said and putting it together was a snap."
Dave C., Fort Pierce, FL

"...this is probably the best deal that I have ever seen on a bike!"
Chris R., Pearl, MS

"My friends are all amazed at the great deal I got."
Tim C., Garner, NC

"Your product description was true to its word and the bikes quality could not be better..."
Frank S., Hixon, TN

"I just wanted to let you know that I think IBEX is an amazing company. To offer the kind of customer service that you do, over the internet, is priceless..."
Sean S., Avon Lake, OH

"This is a top notch bike and I have recommended it to friends and relatives."
Rex O., Vista, CA

"What a Machine!...I feel lucky to have found your web site."
Pete M., San Marcos, CA

"I totally love it. The components are top notch, totally sweet."
Vanessa C., Portland, OR

"I ride it through miles and miles of rocks, it still works great. I ride it for 9 hours straight, it still works great. I crash, fall off bridges, and slam into trees with it, it still works great!"
Dan S., State College, PA

"I've barely gotten the bike out of the box and I am already in love with it…"
Eric S., Manly, IA

"Definitely a quality bike and a great riding experience."
Steve K., Santa Ana, CA

"The bike was delivered exactly on time and arrived in perfect order. It took less than 30 minutes and I was off and riding."
John F., The Villages, FL

My friend rides a Ibex, and I have been in the room when he has been on phone with them, and even talked with these guys a year ago when I was looking for a new road bike. The guys at there warehouse would like to hear about this! (F--- People that have to scam to make a living.) The truth of the matter is; if the deal is to good to be true than it probably is not!

Since this scam site pops up so often, maybe we should have a sticky somewhere outlining the details of this particular site.

- Logos swiped from Performance
- Feedback swiped from Ibex
- Square Trade logo that does not link to squaretrade.com

I have a Ibex. Purchased last year. I have been on the phone with them and have gotten some of the best service I have ever had, ever. A week after I bought mine, it went on sale fro 75$ less. They contacted me before I noticed and refunded the 75. Very good people. Now this max bike seems to good to be true.

I can't get the link to work any more, so hopefully these fools have been dealt with. For now, anyway.

Good idea on the sticky, cydewaze.

You'd think someone who lives in Sydney would be able to spell it properly.

Ibex tells me that this is a common scam and by the time they get to the scammers, they'll be running shop elsewhere.

However, there are many dead giveaways that show that maxbikes is a scam even if you don't know anything:

1) Even if you ignore the ridiculous selection/prices, these guys aren't on the authorized dealer lists for the companies they sell for

2) They advertise free worldwide shipping. There is a reason that legitimate businesses never offer this.

3) Their accounts are hosted by cheapo providers for $7-8 month. Legitimate operations that do lots of business over the web are going to use a provider with a more robust service guarantee. This costs hundreds at a minimum

4) For a company that does a lot of web business, their page is pitiful. They use a simple wysiwyg editor and simple copying software to move their source from one place to another.

5) The page hasn't been up long. https://downlen-bikes.ws43.com/ was only posted a week ago.

BTW, when you report to ISP's, don't forget about attorney generals or the FTC. Scam artists belong in jail.

Yep, but their latest site is hosted in Romania (a freebie site at that). Those places can be less responsive since our legal system can't touch their service providers. In such cases, other measures requiring more imagination must be used. However, the shopping cart at the Romanian site doesn't work so it's safe for now.
