Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

speedplay x5's vs speedplay zeros

has anyone used the speedplay x series pedals and then switched to the zeros? any difference? are the zeros just as easy to get in and out of as the x5s? i read that the zeros have a float adjustment whereas the x series don't. what is the float adjustment for? im kinda new to the whole float idea.

Hey, yanno I don't think anyone's ever asked this before...

Just kidding! It gets asked about once a month.

I started with X-2s then moved to Zeros. I've found that:

- The Zeros feel more secure, because the C-clip that holds you to the pedal is beefier than the one in the Xs.
- The Zeros seem slightly less succeptible to dirt/debris.
- I like the adjustable float because I can limit the inward rotation and keep my heel from hitting the crank arm when I'm out of the saddle and rocking the bike.

Other than that, they're both excellent pedals.

Never tried the X series but I have the Zeros and love them, no complaints.

what are the advantages of the zeros over the x series? my x5s have 20+ degrees of float...whereas the zeros have 15 degrees...is that good or bad? im guessing that having less float would allow for even easier unclipping?

Have the X, love them. Yes, they have a lot of float and for some riders it may feel uncomfortable.

I must say, when I switch from SPDs I have on another bike to the Speedplay X, it feels weird for a couple of minutes, then I'm back to enjoy the best pedals in the world .

Get the stainless, the Cro Mo tend to rust.

I listed three of the advantages. Whether you consider them to be advantages too us up to you. As far as the float goes, for me the 15 degrees is enough. Less float does mean you don't have to rotate as far to get out, but I never had any problems getting out of the Xs so it may be a moot point.

Of course the Xs are a little bit less expensive, but for me the three differences I mentioned were worth the added price.

+ with the zeros you can lock down the positioning so there's no float at all. that's how mine are adjusted.

k, so basically, the zeros have less float which means i can get out even faster than the x's.

You might be able to get out faster, but remember the clip that holds you in is beefier, so it might be a wash. Both are great pedals. The main reason I prefer the Zeros is that beefier c-clip - it seems to engage more securely.
