What year is this Miyata 710

I just purchased this Miyata 710 on e-Bay. I haven' received it yet, so I swipped the pictures for e-Bay for ID purposes. I've been wanting one of these for a while (time to move on from the too small framed old Roland I've been riding around sine 97)

Anyone tell me the age?

T-Mar is the authority but you will need to give more details such as derailleur type & decal info. I have a 1986 but the model is spelled out "Seven Ten" on the top tube instead of numeric like yours. I would guess yours is an earlier model from the one I have given the metal spoke protector. Mine has SunTour Cyclone derailleurs & shift levers and features Miyata's "triple butted tubes & forks" which has internal spiral splines like Columbus SLX tubing. The 86 Seven Tens were painted Steel Blue with yellow head tubes. Don

27" wheelset also indicates an earlier model, mine has 700c Ukai rims. I like the yellow color on yours. I added the Giles Berthaud stainless steel fenders on mine to cope with our maritime climate. Don

WOW This bike is virtually identical to the one I posted about earlier. Same components and everything, except mine is brown. Good luck, man!

My post is https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/223523-new-miyata-question-t-mar.html -- and I'll get pics up soon so we can compare.

So you were really shopping for a 710 for a while? I just stumbled on this one on CL.

Miyata

Just wanted to say that both 710s look great. I saw the yellow one on ebay and if it was my size I would have been very tempted. I also let go a blue and yellow 710 just like the other picture on ebay a couple of weeks ago and I haven't slept since!

Still looking for my very own 710,

I've bid on a couple on eBay and lost. I was mainly looking for a decent road bike, something to get started on, really. Stumbled on a 710 I liked on eBay, missed it, did some research and they sound like nice machines so I kind of got hooked. I wasn't around for the end of the auction this time, either, so I didn't expect to win. Now I just have to wait for it to ship from CA to UT!

Looks to me like most likely 1983-84, maybe a year either way.

No way it has a cassette hub, BTW.

Indeed, if it is anything like mine, it has a shimano freewheel with those slightly twisted teeth (Uniglide?). But mine was skipping. So I just picked up a new chain and thread-on freewheel.

As for narrowing it down, I read elsewhere that the second digit of a Miyata serial No. may indicate year of manufacture.

I post pics of mine to compare to the yellow one.

Sheldon, if you're still monitoring this thread, could you explain to me the significance of the Miyata Radial tires you mention in your article? I had originally planned on "upgrading" to Conti Ultra Sports (100 psi range).

Sheldon,

Thanks for the reply and great site. I've been popping into your website for a while now (though I'll admit, the tire size stuff leaves me baffled a bit!) When I get the bike delivered, I'll post an update about the ride, etc.

I've always wanted a pair of those tires, they're supposed to be very good.

Panaracer was doing radials for a while in the '80s, but I never found them available in 630 or 622 except as Miyata OEMs.

I do own a pair of 559 Panaracer radials, 26 x 1.5. They seem to have unusually low rolling resistance, and unusually good power transmission. Unfortunately, they are also sorta wobbly from side to side, which makes them feel unnervingly as if they were going flat. Whenever I've ridden with them, I've found myself constantly stopping to check the pressure.

I suspect this problem may not exist with the narrower tires you have, but, as I say, I've never been able to find a pair...interested in parting with them? I'd put 'em on my Rambouillet in a heartbeat...

Sheldon, send me a PM on the tires.

Nosferaustin, What's the ETA on your yellow 710?

The proper term for the color is 'camel beige'. No that's not a typo. It is 'camel', as opposed to "carmel", which makes more sense to me. Maybe it lost a 'r' in the translation.

Nosferaustin, when you receive the bicycle, I'd appreciate the serial number for my database. Please send it via Private Messages. Thxs.

Got IT!

Bike arrived quickly! It was on the front porch when I got home yesterday evening...sweet. After spending some time unpacking it, I ran up to a local bike shop to get some new tires (old ones were rotting) and got them on the wheels. Just barely got everything loosly put together, haven't taken it out for a spin yet as I need to get the wheels trued up and make sure everything is working...and it was raining this morning, didn't want to risk a commute on an un-sure ride yet.

Over all I think I'm going to be very satisfied with her, she looks good (some where, as can be expected on a 25 year old bike) but I'm excited about it!

Thanks for all of the info and I'll try to get some pictures up when I get her all cleaned and fixed up!

I just finished building my Miayata 710, which T-Mar said was an 80 or 81. Looks pretty similar to yours, nosferaustin. I rode it to work this morning and it feels really nice and comfortable!

The cup and bb bottom bracket gave me a fun rebuild experience and it's smoother than my cartridge. Also, I used some trickery to get recessed mount brakes to work with the frame, as it's not drilled for them. Sheldon Brown's advice on his site works...

Still haven't taken her out, yet. I'm planning on taking it in tomorrow after work to the Salt Lake Bicycle Collective, where I can have one of their folks look it over and show me how to do some of the work myself, using all of their tools, etc. If it's too much to handle for them, I've been given the names of a few good folks in the area to take it to, unless I decide to tackle it myself, which I'd love to do, if I can find the time / tools.

We'll see.

Your seven-ten does look a lot like mine, good job on the build and happy riding!

One significant difference is the 710 in numerals on yours is spelled out "Seven Ten" on mine.

The bike rides amazing, you're going to love it!
