Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sorry you feel that way. It's quite the opposite for me. I'm slowly narrowing it down and these vote options give me much more info than the generic "what pedals should it buy" question. In my mind finding answers with a poll like that, though probably not exactly useless, is far more "complicated".

Ultimately if I get enough responses here it will make the final decision for me.

THX!

The poll numbers keep rising but not the replies. So, this one needs bumping.
...Bump.

I have ultegra, have not tried keo.
If i was to do again, id prolly buy keo carbon from probikekit, since the prices are similar and the carbons have much more ocp points

You can't go wrong either way.

I haven't tried Keos, but I have tried Ultegra, Time RXS and Wellgo 105 SPD knock off.

I'm happy with Ultegra pedals, and everyone I know with Looks likes them as well.

I'm loving my Keo Carbons. I've used a friend's R540's (105 level SPD-SL) and they felt fairly simular, but I think I'd put the edge to the Keo.

Op, I was in the same situation you were and coul;dn't decide between which to get. After reading a bunch of reviews I went with Ultegras. I mainly did this because:

1.) A lot of people complain about Looks cleats squeaking (haven't had issuses with me spd-sl.
2.) (not a Lance fan) But knowing how Lance can be picky very particulair about his gear.... if they work for him then they will work for me.

FWIW, I have Ultegras on my race bike and 105's on my beater bike. I bought them both at Probikekit. $80. bucks for the Ultegras and $34. for 105's.

BTW Keo Carbons have a whoppin 39 count of reviews at roadbikereview.com. Several of the negatives say that they snapped a pedal right off! This is probably the biggest downer I've heard of keos so far. Thats not to say that Utlegras might not have a similar downfall. They only have a measly 2 reviews.

Issue 1 is completley stupid, you must've read reviews on the older look cleats before they came teflon tipped. Issue 2 is debateably stupid, ultegra or keos lance will destroy everyone on this forum.

I use the Look keo carbon cro mo spindle that I got from probike kit.com in december last year for $113. they are a molded injected carbon not much OCP value there. I am approaching 4,000 miles now on them and they are still as smooth, bearing wise, and tight as the day I installed them. The cleats chew up pretty easily but replacement cleats are cheap. I would highly recomend these pedals for function not for appearance. but I have not tried shimano road pedals so I can't compare.

I have Keo Classics, and I've been very happy. Never a bit of sound out of the pedals or the cleats. I did find that walking even a little bit chewed the cleats up something fierce. Best investment I've ever made for my bike to date was the $10 rubber covers for the cleats. No more slippery, and no more cleat damage.

The Keo Classic pedal was cheap, and while I haven't used the Shimano SPD-SL pedal system I imagine it's much the same: I couldn't ask for more from my pedals. Easy in, easy out, have never slipped out by accident. The only thing I might ask for is a lighter pedal if I was going to go the weight weenie route, but that's just a matter of spending more money in both the Keo and Shimano line.

Stupid?! Seems like kind of an odd/harsh choice of words.

1) So you are saying, "keo pedals don't squeak". Cool, thanks for the info.
2) I don't think he was saying that Lance performed better because of shimano pedals. I believe he was just saying that if Lance was happy with shimanos then he will be too.

BTW, This has been a super close race! I'm surprised by that! I expected keos to win by a landslide. And here's an interesting thing. 7 out of 12 people who have experience with both brands prefer the Ultegra. This might suggest that the overall score may be even closer than the current 2 point spread.

Bikes: Too many to count

I have Looks. The old style Look cleats squeaked like a mofo when they started getting old. In the past couple years, Look now sells cleats that have teflon infused into the plastic at the contact points where it would meet the pedal. The teflon cleats are a couple bucks more than the old cleats, but the ability to ride without hearing squeaks was a big thing. That was a huge selling point for me and the reason why I went with the Looks. If you get the Shimano's, they will squeak when the cleat gets old, but it's not that big a deal. just squirt some oil on the cleat and the squeak goes away. Or just replace your worn out cleats. Everybody does it.

Is the only difference between Dura Ace and Ultegra pedals the weight, just like the components? I'm looking into getting a set, but I don't know all of the specifics.

Issue 1.) Just repeating what a lot of friends have said. A quick fix to any squeak is a little silicon spray

Issue 2.) If you read any biographies on Lance you would now that he is a control freak when it comes to his equipment "the ***** that will kill them".... I'm not attacking Look Keo's (once my Ultegras die I will prolly try a pair of keos) I was just saying that if spd-sl pedals meet Lance's high standards for equipment then they meet mine and HAVE met my standards.

Operator, before attacking others comments, maybe you should get rid of the seat post up your butt and instead discuss your own opinions on these pedals.

I have both - 2 sets of each actually.

Both are real, real gud - (accent intentional)

Go with ones you can get the best deal on or look nicest to you. Remember, after 3 rides, they won't look nice anymore.

If you are going to call someone or something else "completley" stupid, or "debateably" stupid, perhaps you may want to use spell check before you do.

My understanding about Lance and pedals is that he was riding Shimano pedals that were manufactured by Look for Shimano several years ago. Lance preferred the Look/Shimno pedal/cleat system to the Shimano spd system. Shimano, being a sponsor and all, wanted Lance riding the latest Dura-ace stuff instead of a pedal that's no longer made. They wanted people like us to buy pedals because Lance uses them. The compromise was that Shimano manufactured a new set of pedals (SPD-SL style) that was based on the older Look manufactured Shimano pedals Lance was already using, but updated with the latest in $technology$.

I don't think you (or Lance) can go wrong with a quality pedal from either Look or Shimano.

+1, My point was that Lance supposebly helped with the R&D on the new system

Whoa! Ultegra overtakes! ...A net lead of 6 votes.
One more quick question. I'm guessing that either cleat is going to wear pretty quick without covers. Are the covers pretty comparable in quality and walking comfort?

Yeah I believe weight is the main diff, plus a little style, and price of course.
