I skipped Monday and Tuesday cause the snow in Brooklyn Monday morning was significant and Tuesday the Magic Eightball said, "I just don't know." I took that as an ok to let MTA be my ride....

Today I rode.

Brooklyn was fine (I haven'tbeen in the park), 3rd Ave the, Bergen, the bridge was fine -- I could rant about the woman int he mini-van I "discussed" the bike lane with but I don't want to digress.

The Greenway was fine below the Meat-packing district. Up from there there were numerous very icy spots. I opted off at 72nd Street and took Riverside up to Harlem cause the ice was bad. Riverside was fine. The Magic Eithball said of riding today, "Seek professional help." So, I have nobody to blame but myself.

I was on Ocean Parkway over the weekend, there were some spots of black ice scattered around, especially at the curb cuts. It was easy enough to avoid in daylight, but I've avoided it in the evenings this week.

I might take a spin around the park tonight if I'm feeling ambitious, I can report back on the shape of things there.

as for PP - the ice isn't necessarily a problem if there isn't traffic. a couple of days ago it covered a few portions of the jogging\cycling lane and forced you into the main road.


has anyone ridden the shore parkway yet?

I had planned on the Shore Parkway this past weekend, wish I had done it, as I'm pretty sure it could be treacherous. It's not plowed for traffic, and doesn't seem to get as heavily used as Ocean Pkwy, so the odds that it is clear seem dubious... Also, the area is definitely sketchy for riding at night, I usually try to avoid that down there. Might give it a shot this weekend, it's easier to deal with patchy ice in the daylight.

I was hoping it was warm enough today for the ice to no longer be an issue.

Rode up the west side Greenway this am, to the GWB & up the Palisades to Piermont. Some small patches of snow & ice on the Greenway, but nothing significant. The GWB is clear.

There were some decent sized patches of ice & snow in the Palisades. Basically, anywhere near all of those small falls there is some ice. Nothing too bad though. Just stay away from the edges of the path near those falls.

Had a nice ride but it is still frikkin cold. Managed to catch one flat one the way out & one on the way back. Quite an adventure.

Holy hell, if I had to repair a flat in this cold, I'd be frozen. And no way I'm risking my new carbon wheels out there, those things don't even brake that well in the cold..

Better save those new toys for warmer weather

Me? I was warming up after my ride along the frozen Hudson.

I didn't notice any ice on the bike path but there are large disks of ice, maybe five feet in diameter, that go our as far as the piers. Another week or two of this weather and we may not need ferries

Yeah, that was no fun. Actually snapped a plastic tire lever in half in the process. I think it was brittle from the cold. I'd def save the carbon wheels for a dry spring day. The road grit & rock salt can't be good for them.

The carbon wheels don't stop well in the cold ?
I wonder if the pads are a lot harder in the cold. Just a guess.

Yeah it's like the pads are dry and brittle or something. I know it stops a helluva lot better in my apartment than when it's outside.

Lucky, try a pair of topeak tire levers. They're plastic but they have metal inside them.

About 10mph then I jam it to a stop.
I can repeat the same thing outside and the amount of deceleration I feel is a lot less.

I had a couple of bikes that the front brake would always squeak in the cold and never squeak in the heat. I worked on them for ages before I realized it was the cold. It is possible the pads get harder and stiffer in the cold.

Did I see R600DA doing laps in the apt. too? I think you can drop him in the hallway !

If I ever saw R600 in my apartment w/o me inviting him over, I'll shoot to kill, ask questions later...

The road around Prospect was clear today. I definitely don't have 400 watts in me right now... for shame.

any reports today...the day after the storm? i chickened out myself and didn't ride yesterday or today. thinking about heading over to PP tomorrow morning though.

I had a ride down Ocean Parkway to the Shore Parkway path today, and over to Breezy Point on the Rockaways.

The path on Ocean Pkwy. was clear except for one spot under the Belt Parkway, though it was wet in a lot of spots. There was some snow in the puddles at the intersections, but nothing bad.

The shore parkway was half covered in a few spots, and completely ice/snow decked in a spot or two.

The extension down to the Marine Park bridge was fully covered in ice/slush in a few spots, but nothing deadly. Just keep it slow and be ready to put fut down

The road to Breezy Point was basically completely clear, and it was good to be able to get that far afield again.

I did a bunch of laps with some people from fixed gear forums, the park is absolutely clear but some spots are moist and there's a tiny puddle at the downhill plus a police horse was spreading manuere.

The streets are pretty clear but some home owners are starting to throw ice onto the street from the sidewalk for it to melt. The pulaski bridge (for the very few people who go that way) is completely covered in ice so take green point to get across.

As of Tuesday afternoon (2/20) Fort Washington Park had NOT been plowed, but the bike path, south of the 145th Street Sewage Treatment Plant was fine.

Rode from 66th to to the wooden bridge that x's the rail tracks just past the GWB. All is pretty much clear except for the hill above the tracks, and one small section north of the sewer treatment plant. I had wanted to go down to Battery Park but it started to drizzle by the time I had gotten back down to 59th St so I headed home. The greenway was very wet in spots from snow melt, and me and the bike returned home covered with sand and salt that had no doubt been placed by the parks dept in various locations. Forecast is for an inch of wet snow overnight.
