Shine a flashlight up the post. You might find that it's carbon-wrapped alloy and it won't matter.

I don't want to spend $100 on a post. I've had one before but the reality is, if a post is doing it's job you shouldn't notice it. My search reveals that it will be tough to get a non-setback for less than that price though...

What is it that makes one tube with a clamp at the top better than another tube with a clamp at the top? Is it just weight?

I'm much more of a clyde than SD and...
My latest shop noticed something similar when I brought my ride in for a tuneup, they said they plastered some epoxy on it and it should be fine.
I have never touched my post, I got fit by a great fitter and the seat hight was perfect, so i have no idea who over the last three years cranked down my post, it could be one of many shops that have had the bike in for this or that. Becuase of the CAAD8 frame, they have to use the post for putting the bike in a stand becuase my 5 year old could pinch the tubes on the Cannondale.
I still haven't seen the fix, its below the clamp level.
Superglue?
