Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

After the accident where a cyclist died a element of the PFP division... it looks like they stopped and possibly detained the motorist.

Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico. Just south of Brownsville Texas
The below picture from the paper seems to show a guy in cuffs against the car...

Very scary...

At least the police car leading the race got out of the way...

(only speculating)...

Bikes: Some bikes. Hell, they're all the same, ain't they?

What amazes me is that I don't think any of us would think of this actually happening.

That is, it's so stupendously horrific that it surely can't happen in real life. Nobody drives headlong into a pack of cyclists.

Right?

Serious question -- has anything like this happened before? I'm not talking about the incident a week or so ago where a road raging driver braked in front of fifty cyclists.

It wasn't during a race, but one year ago, less than a mile from my house. On a Sunday morning, a drunk driver crossed the center line and hit a group of cyclist killing two. I'm a noob to the forum, but I'd bet it was mentioned back when it happened. Westside of Cincinnati(I bet I haven't bothered to fill out my profile yet).

I thought this was going to be a joke about the "centerline rule" and my heart sank when I saw that image

Same here; this was one of the few times that I audibly gasped at a picture.

ImaPoser, I figured that some drunk would smash into a recreational ride. I guess that I'm wondering more about whether it's happened during an organized race. Was this lone cop car the only vehicle they had at the front?

According to Mexican sources, this was a recreational ride, not a race. The riders, more than 400, were in groups of about 15 each. The accident was caused by an apparently drunk driver who ignored warnings from the leading police car and ran head on into a group. The police arrested him on the spot. Two cyclists died and up to 14 were injured, 2 of them seriously. The ride was cancelled.

Very sad. Prayers to the deceased and loved ones.

A reminder to us all: it's a dangerous sport and no amount of cops or "safety in numbers" will change that.

How horrific That's the most disturbing cycling picture I've ever seen. I hope the survivors recover as best they can under the circumstances.

A police car did it recently in California.

I speak Spanish and here's (in short) what the article says:
Matamoros, Tamaulipas - A bike ride called "Matamoros to Bagdad Beach" ended this Sunday morning in tragedy when a driver drove into its lead group. Early reports said that it happened a little after 8:00am. 500 people participated in the race overall. 15 of them were involved in the crash. The club that ran the race is called “Camaleones” and this was the third time the race has been run.

When the lead group got to 16k, the driver swerved across the road and struck them. 34 year old Alejandro Álvarez from Brownsville was killed. The rest of the riders had various fractures and road rash. All were treated at Matamoros Hospital. The driver, Juan Campos, was arrested has been tested for drugs and alcohol.
