Sporty Sees the Light of Day!
This summer has been;
Too rainy, two busy, and I've had too many days out of town.
Thus, Sporty, my Dr.Deltron painted, JR decaled, significantly Campified, '72 Schwinn Super Sport, has not seen too much road time since mid June after it was built up. Every chance I had time for outdoor pics, the day was overcast or raining.
But today blessed us in NH with much needed sunshine so I rolled Sporty into the yard for a few candid shots.
I had planned to use a first generation Campy Rally RD, but it shifted worse than any RD I've even used. So I ended up using a Sachs-Huret Eco Duopar and I'm extremely pleased.
Another hitch I ran into (after determining Record cones will work in a Tipo front hub), is that the Tipo QR skewers would not hold the wheels tight in their dropouts. I ended up using Avocet QR which get the job done nicely.
I'm very pleased with the gearing and the look of the TA rings and triplelizer.
The one thing I would like to change would be the stem and bars. They are a tad too low and the bars are very narrow. I do have the bars and stem I need to make the changes, but that will have to wait until winter.

I've never seen an SS look so good.

Pastor Bob, if Schwinn had made Super Sports look as good as yours they would have sold a whole lot more of them!

That bike can steal the thunder from a sunny day and beautiful wild flowers. If it rides as nice as it looks you will be one happy biker.

Thanks guys!
If I had been able to take some outdoor pics when I built it up back in June, I would not be here this evening. If you've never ridden a Super Sport, you might be quite surprised. It is significantly more responsive when turning then is my '66 Paramount. The difference is very noticeable.
The geometry is more akin to my '83 Paramount, but the SS probably weighs a good 5-7 lbs more. BTW, I don't know what it weighs. A guess would be about 27-28 lbs, but I might be surprised (after all, it doesn't have that heavy steel kickstand).

Beautiful PastorBob! Hard to believe that's a Schwinn...
I would bet it's lighter than that. My Peugeot UO8 is 25-lbs and it's not even cromoly tubing.

I still can't believe how wonderful the bike formerly known as "mine" looks today. Excellent work, now ride the hell out of it!

Bob, it's beautiful. I know a lot of time, effort, and patience went into Sporty and it really shows!
Congratulations. It's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Every time I see a pic I'm amazed. You also have the distinction of swaying me towards those elk hide bar wraps. I think I need a nice set in Expresso.
The shot of the cranks with the reflection off of the paint in the ND crank arm suggests many many hours of polishing work, and also shows the purity of a Dr. D masterpiece.
Absolutely lovely.

+1 on the elkhide I like the set I have on the Volare. Did you Proofide them? If you do they will darken a bit to match the Brooks nearly dead on (or at least mine did) and then they will shine so nice when wiped down but they are not the least bit slippery

Pastor, that is a really fine build!
Speaking of geometry, can you measure the seat tube and head tube angles? I always wonder how they affect comfort and handling. Seems to have maybe 45 cm chainstays ... and a larger BB drop.

Thanks again for all the nice comments. I am proud of my work that Dr.Deltron, and JR collaborated on. Without their expertise I couldn't have succeeded. I guess we could say that Schwinn was the original inspiration and I just help take a Super Sport to a different level.
SB, I did Proofide the Elk wrap and I'm very pleased. Most of my other road bikes have Botranger cork tape. The Elk Hide is every bit as comfortable. The one picture I didn't take was of the bars, levers, and stem.
RF, I'll do some measuring, but I'm not certain I have the tools to make accurate angle measurements. If it rains--- I'll measure. If it stays dry--- I'm going to go for a ride!

Okay -- here comes crabby ol' Uncle Mikey to pick nits. When you were first brainstorming Sporty and talking about color matching the cable housings and decals, it sounded like the thing to do. Now that I see it in it's completed glory, the housings seem like a visual distraction; the bright yellow tends to pull the eye away from the rest of the bike -- which is the real eye candy.
Jus' sayin'. And jus' jealous.
