My 705 has been working fine until now, and I have the latest firmware. I downloaded a GPX file from mapmyride.com, and tried to follow it. The unit kept trying to send me to the start even though I was on the route and a couple miles into it. Then the unit would completely shut down. It shut down multiple times. After a while of this, it started navigating properly, but at some point started trying to route me back to the start, which cut off about 10 miles of my ride, once I realized it was doing this. I can see the file in my Garmin but seems to be corrupt because it won't upload into Garmin Training Center, Garmin Connect, or SportTracks.
I remember some discussion about coursed versus routes. Which one will simply navigate the route and steer me back onto it, rather than trying to make me go back to the start? Also, anyone know if this problem I had is isolated or pervasive?

You are dealing with two different issues here.
1. Your Edge will not follow the GPX route file you downloaded properly.
2. Your history file is corrupt. Most likely due to the multiple shutdowns that occurred.
There is no real solution for #1 other than waiting for Garmin to further improve on the auto-routing abilities of the Edge. Have you tried using a GPX file from BikeRouteToaster.com?
One work around to this issue is to use a course (TCX) file instead. Advantage is that it will never recaclulate and AlWAYS follow the same path. Dissadvantage is that you will only have turn warnings i f you add them.
You could also attemt to us a GPX file with automatic re-routing disabled.
The corrupt history file issue became dramatically worse with the 2.7 update. Word on the street is that an update to correct is coming in the next few weeks. You could try posting your corrupt file in the forums at Motion Based to see if someone can recover them.

I guess that I have a similar problem to orcanova's.
Two times I was trying to follow GPX routes and I had to get a little off route, but I managed to get back on route. Despite being on the route, it kept telling me to make a U-turn.
I also had a lap file that wouldn't turn into a TCX file because it was corrupted. When I tried to transfer it to my desktop, Vista said that it was corrupted and asked if I wanted to "fix" it. I said yes, and it fixed it and allowed me to transfer it to my desktop. Garmin Training Center still wouldn't read it, though.
I've got to go back to version 2.6

RoboCheme, send me the TCX file and I will fix it for you.
Also, have you done the "hard reset" after updating to 2.7?

Is anyone able to see cadence on the 705 without a sensor but using a PowerTap hub as a source or "other" (there you go umd!) power meter? When I download the data from the ride onto Garmin training center, it will show the average cadence so I know it was getting it from the PT hub as I don't even have the sensor on the bike. However, I am not able to see it on the screen while riding though if I choose it as an option.

Now that I've got 2.6 back, I screwed up and said that I didn't have a heart monitor. How do I tell it that I DO have a heart monitor?
I tried to do a hard reset, but I must not being doing that right either (while pressing mode, I hit the on/off button).
How do I add the heart monitor? Or how do I do a hard reset?
Thanks,

to add a hr monitor, it's menu > settings > ant + sport > accessories
for "heart monitor present" hit enter and select "yes"

I'm running on 2.7 and the unit is working fine.
I have noticed though that there are a lot - and I do mean a LOT - of odd files in the Garmin filesystem that look like corrupted XML files, as the filenames are XML tag fragments.
It doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but it is odd.

Here is what Garmin sent to me a few days ago regarding the corrupted file issue:
Mr. Huntsman,
Yes, we are working on a software to fix this. I do not have a
timeframe yet, but it should be out soon. Please feel free to let me
know if you need anything else.

AND:
There are a couple things we can try to fix the problem. If you are
using a Windows based computer, you may be able to do a check disk on
the removable drive the Edge creates. To do a check disk with Windows
XP, please visit https://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265. If you are
using Windows Vista, please visit https://www.pctipsbox.com/how-to-use-...windows-vista/.
If you are unable to do the check disk, you may be able to delete just
the bad lap from the ride. To do this:
1. With the Edge connected to your computer, please open MY COMPUTER
2. Open the GARMIN folder
3. Open the HISTORY folder
4. Please copy the LAP folder to your desktop. As you are doing this,
you should receive a message reading: LAP XXX is corrupt.
5. Open the LAP folder on the device and delete the corrupt lap that was
just displayed
6. Close MY COMPUTER and disconnect the device
7. Reconnect the device to the computer. This may regenerate the TCX
file without the corrupted lap. If it does, you can then load the
information to Garmin Connect or Training Center. By doing this, your
totals should still be correct, but you will loose the map data for the
lap that had to be deleted.
If the problem still continues, you can reload the 2.60 software to
solve the problem. Be advised, this may erase all of your history. To
do so, with the unit connected to your computer, please unzip the file I
have attached to this email to the GARMIN folder on the Edge.

This is getting worse. Now, the unit just plain won't turn on.
I saw the symptom when I first got it (a 705), but it would turn on after about a half an hour. Now, after five hours, it still won't turn on.

Hi everyone,
Anyway I've got a Garmin Edge 705 that has a great feature, periodically for no apparent reason it just shuts down. You're riding along, following a course, or even better, riding along, make a route up as you go and waaam! The Garmin's asleep on the wheel... bars.
Anyway I have updated the firmware, was running unknown but now on 2.7. Do you guys want me to follow up with the results of the update?
Michael

If I worked at Garmin I would hang my head in shame.

Firmware 2.7 is a known dog. Crash and file corruption bugs.
2.8 seems much better.

Nothing but Trouble
I bought the 705 one month ago. Firstly i would not read the SD card, after much resetting and Software update it did. But than i paid attention to Details as far i could. Reason,- I had always Condensation under the Display ( No - i did not ride in Rain and stored the Unit not in air conditioned environment)
The Elevation showed one Day 70 mtr. height and the next day 20mtr under Water.
I wrote mails to :
techsupp@garmin
productsupport@garmin and
marketingasia@garmin
they asked me to send in my TCX Files so I did.
Answer from 6 different people My Unit works fine. Everything is in Order. I have been told that I have to switch on the Unit 15mins before I ride.
The Dealer refuse to exchange since Garmin says my Unit is fine.
Garmin does not answer to any of my mails or adress any of my Problems. I paid here in Thailand nearly 1,000.- USD for the Item and expected something. All I've got is Trouble,- wasting time with uncountable Emails and frustration every time i fix it on my Bike

My Garmin Edge 705 was replaced by the factory this spring. It works beautifully. Too bad it took 7 technical support calls over 10 months for Garmin Technical to finally agree to my request to replace the lemon.

Wow I must be extrememly lucky. Have been using mine since May and have experienced no problems at all. I had more issues with my Cateye.
