Todays commute was annoying as hell

This guy was riding an Electric Scooter, so it's not Gas powered thus, not considered a regular scooter.

He had no driver license plate, else i'd have phone the Cops to report it.

And he was driving on the normal Bike lane.

Like hey i don't mind regular bike with ebike upgrades, but common, a damn big fat scooter, taking up the whole bike lane that is lame.

the guy didn't let normal biker pass him, and if we did, then he is aggressive enough to just prove and push his way through us, or if we pedal faster, then he accelerate faster like WTF?

Have you guys deal with those situations before?

That's annoying as hell, but why not just pass on the left?

Push him off the scooter and ride away on the sidewalk.

I personally don't mind if scooters, mopeds, etc. are in the bike lane. They're usually not much wider than a bike with wide panniers.

Find us a pic of the type of scooter. I'm really curious. There are some that are as big as a motorcycle.

Treat it like a bicycle in the BL. Pass it if it's going slower, don't if it's going faster. What is so hard about this?

I'd pass on his left. If he accelerates barring that, I'd draft him. This sounds like someone who deserves uninvited drafting, but be very careful and expect him to do something dumb.

Dial it up to 400W. I seriously doubt the electric scooter has that much juice.

So the problem is the person, not the type of vehicle they drive. Given this one can choose to either engage or disengage with the stupid behavior - seems like the choice made was to engage, in which case one has signed up to play the game, so don't whine about it. Same thing when dealing with a similarly annoying cyclist in the BL.

As he's muscling past you, reach over and grab a fistful of his front brake lever. Or skitch him by hanging onto his helmet. Either one of those moves ought to ruin his day.

Ain't seen one yet that I couldn't drop, given enough distance. They got no endurance. Beside, I'm a Clyde & can muscle a bit myself.

I have had cyclists do the same thing to me. You could always try to draft him and then pop around him on an uphill and leave him in the dust as his controller overheats and trips the breaker.

I've seen these around town, mostly on the College/Carlton leg of my ride, I usually give them a wide berth and pass - as others have said they're not able to hold a good pace for too long.

Sounds like the person riding it was a dingus, this happens anywhere - at least he wasn't "playing" in a 2000lb car - steer clear/give space to them and just let them get all peeved off, no reason to let him spoil your ride/day

They do look like scooters and would be almost impossible to pedal if the pedals are used. The above "electric bicycles" do have pedals but there usually stored under the seat because they are a safety hazard in turns. As your riding it with the pedals installed they turn just the same as if you've lifted your feet from your pedals while coasting. When you take a curve a pedal will hit the ground lifting the rear wheel off the ground causing a loss of traction and a nasty fall. There are a few people using them on the local rail trail. They are nice people and don't act like an idiot as you describe the one you observed. They usually keep there speed at 10 MPH or slower to conserve there batteries.

The Toronto Cycling Advisory Committee will discuss power-assisted/electric bicycles at the Monday November 3rd meeting (City Hall, Committee Room 4, 7:00 PM). A representative from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation will be presenting information on the three-year pilot project and on the plans to evaluate
the project prior to drafting final legislation on power-assisted/electric bicycles.

Background information from the Ministry's website:
"A commitment has been made to evaluate the pilot prior to its three-year expiry. The intent of the ministry's pilot was to allow e-bikes that look and operate like conventional bikes in order to promote a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to current transportation modes. The ministry has become aware of scooter-style vehicles that technically meet the pilot's e-bike definition, but not the intent, as they are not primarily operated by muscular power due to their heavy weight. Therefore, in addition to evaluating how safely the e-bike can integrate with other motor vehicles, bicycles and
pedestrians, the emergence of the scooter-style e-bikes requires the ministry to also assess its position on the original intent of the pilot when final legislation is drafted."
