Beer after a ride 'is good for the body'

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beer after a ride 'is good for the body'

Good news for those of us that enjoy a cold one after a ride...

"Prof Garzon asked a group of students to do strenuous exercise in temperatures of around 40ºC (104ºF). Half were given a pint of beer, while the others received the same volume of water."

The science stops there. The brilliant science correspondent didn't add anything about how the
results were observed and measured.

Scientific Method Fail

OK, so the fact that the reporter was less than thorough in his reporting invalidates the findings? I think not. One would have to read the actual study to make that determination.

Your analysis. Fail.

More on the method from The Mail

Professor Manuel Garzon, of Granada's medical faculty, made his discovery after tests on 25 students over several months. They were asked to run on a treadmill under stifling temperatures of 40C (104F) until they were close to exhaustion. Once they were on the point of giving up, researchers measured their hydration levels, concentrationability and motor skills. Half were then given two half pints of Spanish lager to drink, while the rest were given water. Both groups were then allowed to drink as much water as they wanted.

Professor Garzon said the rehydration effect in the students who were given beer was "slightly better" than among those given only water. He believes the carbon dioxide in beer helps quench the thirst more quickly, while beer's carbohydrates replace calories lost during physical exertion.

Based on the studies, the researchers have recommended moderate consumption of beer - 500ml a day for men or 250ml for women - as part of an athlete's diet.

Spanish lager?!

BAH, the best rehydration drink after a good hard ride is an Oatmeal Stout, MAYBE a Cream Stout, depending on the weather outside.

Im all for drinking beer after riding.

What Im interested in is whether the test subjects "felt" re-hydrated or if their hydration levels were
measured and compared. Its a huge difference and it wasn't even mentioned.

Was anyone else amused by the article's phrase, "strenuous round of golf"?

It seems that the criteria for strenous activity is pretty low. IMO, that means beer is good pretty much any time.

Spanish lager??? Assuming it was Estrella, that may as well have been water! I'm tempted to call these results statistical noise, but instead I'll try to reproduce them on my own.

Obviously, this is a subject which needs much more investigation. I for one am doing my part.

Water vs. beer: of course. The carbs are giving most of the benefit. Put beer up against a sports drink and see what happens.

Sounds like some drunks looking for justification.

I am partial to a Guinness with an egg in it after a very hard workout.

I didn't even have to read the study. Just the headline of this thread is all the encouragement I need to continue to re-hydrate with beer now and then.

Man, sometimes a cold beer after a ride is like the Nectar O' The Gods.

I like Guinness quite a bit, but I doubt I would go for an egg in it.

I do believe I will be doing my own research on this subject, not including eggs.

my studies have shown that a post-ride spliff is much more enjoyable.

Why wait until after?

My two fastest days ever on my 15-mile training route came when I get home from an after-work beer or two, found nobody around, and went for a ride.

The first beer after the ride would be fine, it's the next 23 that would do me in.

It's friggin Amateur Hour around this place.

I rode once with a German who was doing a bike trip from Alaska to Patagonia. He would start at 8 AM and at 9 stop for a 500ml can. Seems it worked for him; never for me.
