Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Racing Categories A-E vs. 5-1 ??

I'm searching for bike races and I am confused about the categories. Obviously I'm a beginner so I understand I'm considered entry at Cat 5, But what does it mean when the ride is categorized as D or E?

Is it simply that E = 5, D = 4, etc... and this is just to confuse people? (sarcasm)

Or are the letters and numbers designating different things?

Thanks.

Racing subforum might help more. Some training races are classified A/B/C. That can mean whatever the organizers want it to. Real races are by numbered category.

The letters are for collegiate racers. If you're not racing for a college team than you are a 5. Hope that clears it up.

Yeah, letters are collegiate.

Here are the USAC road upgrade guidelines (good overview): https://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=580

Alot of the races back home used numbers to put you into a letter category which made sense until I found out that letters are collegiate.

in our conference, D is the rookies. C is after you've completed 1 yr of racing (cat 4 essentially) and B and A are varied based on how many riders are Cat 1, 2, and 3. Its very likely to find riders from diff cat's in diff letter races.

Best advice, think of it as an overview ranking system (which it is). If you think your ability is beginner, goto D (or E in ur case I suppose) If you think you're pro, goto A. etc.
