I'll be riding for the first time this year - what is the deal with the backpacks, some folks bringing arm warmers etc?

I'd suggest not packing important stuff like keys and wallet though in case you have to abandon or whatever. Theft has never been a problem but stuff has been left behind and spilled from plastic bags.

Yeah, arm warmers, jacket, flip flops, food, whatever will fit into a regular size back pack. They don't let anybody down until after 11 o'clock or so, so you might be up there a long time and it might be cold.

Not a requirement but a good idea in case it's not claimed for whatever reason. Also if it's a plain color you might want to add a bright ribbon or something to help you find it.

It was cold at the top, so I'll be stuffing a light jacket in my jersey pocket.

It's funny thinking about that after sitting in the summit parking lot mid morning yesterday watching rivulets of sweat running down my arms and legs. 1 week is a long time in bay area weather terms though.

It's funny, I've found myself wondering how much faster everyone's time might be if we didn't have to gingerly negotiate that monstrous section of pavement.

Woo hoo! I was given an entry from a friend of a friend. Although it is in Wave 4, I'll take it.
My goal is to see if I can catch a Wave 1 straggler.
Don't know what shape I'll be in that morning for the night before, I have a 50th b-day celebration for my sibling in Granite Bay.
It's going to be an early morning wake up call on Sunday to get over to the mountain.
Anyway, I always bring a backpack. Filled with an extra jersey, plus a light coat or sweater. You'll never know, it's been known to get cold waiting on the top. Plus if you're into collecting swag, you'll need some place to stash it.

If you happen to pass this Wave 2 straggler, you can be sure I'll be trying to suck that wheel.

I got my entry, but I can't make it next weekend. I am going to be in LA. Does anyone know if the entry is transferable? And if so, I am looking for takers. Send me a PM if you would like it. I am not asking for any money for it, I just want it to go to good use. And also, I think it is for wave 2.

Looks like the best weather in years.
Saturday and Saturday Night
Partly cloudy. Highs in the mid 70s to lower 80s. Lows in the 40s to upper 50s.
Sunday
Partly cloudy. Highs in the lower to mid 70s.
Last year was really windy (course record set anyway), two years ago was damn cold.

I'll be there in the first wave. I'm not real optimistic on a PR, though. We should all meet up and say hi at the beginning.

I'm in! Wave 2. I'm definitely bringing a backpack. Two years ago, I froze at the top waiting to go down. I'm also getting there early and bringing a trainer. Last time I don't think I was properly warmed up.

One question for you folks who've ridden this before - what's the strategy for the danged potholes? I've been imagining that the section before you get to the park could be something of a nightmare with that many cyclists trying to navigate around those craters. Any tips?

Surprisingly, the uphill section at the start tends to stretch out the field so there isn't that much traffic near the potholes. No one was going too fast. Just hang back a bit.

Hopefully they'll be marked for easy viewing. Think of them like skiing the bumps. The larger bumps are always in the middle with very few on the edge.
Just resist the temptation of of stopping to pick up that cool looking pump or computer that fell from someones bike.

Looking at this mornings weather report https://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/queryF?MTD looks like we could be in for low to mid 50's on the climb, hopefully not too windy. I think I'll forego the backpack and carry arm warmers as well as wear a baselayer.
I'll probably be wearing my usual Hammer jersey (good pockets and fit, can't give it up), hope to see you guys in the upper lot.
