Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Think I just broke my bike...

Im riding along on my trainer and I shift into the lowest gear...53-12 I think. I said up to ride and all of a sudden it freezes up on me. At first I thought it was the trainer, it over-heated or something. So I took the bike off and when I turn the crank the wheel wont spin, like something is holding it. I thought maybe I bent it out of true but when I flipped up the brake it still wont spin. I can spin the crank backwards and the gears spin but it wont spin forward and spin the tire. Anyone have any idea what the hell I just broke?

it seems to be in the drop pretty good. I took it out and put it back in.

OK. Check all of the spokes. Are they all in tact? Do they have varying of degrees of tension? Take the wheel off the bike and spin it while holding the hub. Does it wobble?

Maybe something inside the freewheel like the pawls are busted.

Awesome geneman, I went back in there to do what you said and I noticed that it wasn't in the drops the whole way. I took it out and popped it back in and BAM! works perfect. Would the tremendous load from me attacking on the trainer cause it to pop out?

Blame it on your tremendous power ... or an ill adjusted skewer. Your choice.

In either case, rule of thumb is that for optimal tension the skewer lever should leave a very light imprint on the palm of your hand when you close it.

Just to make you feel good about yourself, it's the tremendous power.

This happens to me all the time, or at least any time I'm out of 39-23. Sometimes the fluid roller rips right through the concrete in my walls and into the next townhouse. Shame that these were only built in the '90s and the effects of big pumper steroids weren't commonly understood in the working classes. A 18 inch cinder block would prevent such embarassments...
