Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What are the bennys?

Of riding a fixed gear, especially in direct drive mode?

Not the fun and fashion of it but health, muscle, and skill ?

What would I get that I'm not on a multi gear bike?

It can help develop good pedaling technique. Personally, I do it 100% for fun.

First, fixed gear IS direct drive. Basically, you have to turn your legs constantly and cannot coast which gives you a better workout. Also, riding fixed helps you improve your pedaling technique and increase your cadence, which is more efficient. In order to ride fixed properly, you need good foot retention and the best method is clipless.

I like the challenge of it to be honest. When I am on a geared bike, I find myself cheating the ride a lot, coasting, downshifting to an easier gear, etc. Fixed makes you earn those miles a little more than a geared bike. You don't get to coast the downhill sections unless you take your feet off the pedals, and you work every stroke going up the next hill. And, I cannot leave out the connection with the bike. I feel completely connected to it, partly because of the clipless pedals, but partly because as you take off from a light, you are in complete control of how fast or slow you take off, focusing completely on the bike, the ride, yourself, and not futzing around with shifters.

A broader power band.

Smooth stroke if you focus on circles.

Easier drivetrain maintenance and cleaning.

and, um, a heightened sense of well being, and the ushering in of the harmonic convergence.

Actually, I'm not sure on that last point...

I like the fact (as mentioned above) that I need not worry whether I am in too big a gear, or whether I will have to spin like crazy until I find the correct gear.
