It might look pretty ugly/awesome to ziptie a piece touring/cyclocross tire around your tt. I've used this as a chainstay protector on my mtb for a long time.

I've used top tube protectors on fixies and track frames for years and found that you need to be careful of how you assemble them. I've used old tubular latex inner tubes, black inner tubes, etc., clear polyethylene tubing, etc., and they all pretty much release stuff that ends up leaving a nasty stain (if not worse) on your paint finish under the protector. So now I use some plumbers' teflon tape first, then some plastic tape to hold the teflon tape in place, and then I can put whatever I want as a protector on top of it. If you do it neatly, one layer goes right over the previous one so it just looks like a simple, very neat protector. The plastic tape over the teflon also helps protect the top tube from accumulating perspiration under the protector and eating into the frame. (I've had rust under top tube protectors as well.)

thanks for the heads-up on the staining.
i guess it makes sense that plastic tubing is going to be off-gassing solvents...

i looked for this stuff in home depot the other day, but they only had clear vinyl tubing up to 3/4" or so.

where'd you get it?

i got mine at my local hardware store.
you can also probably find it at an aquarium or restaurant supply store

You might be better off scrounging around some of those hardware/gadget shops down on Canal St.

Could someone please enlighten me as to how a one inch wide strip of padding is going to keep your top tube from being scratched to hell?

the 1" strip is just to prevent your bars from dinging the top-tube.

Could also use the clear or colored silicone sticky tape that they now sell in hardware stores.

Or can you just buy Handle Bar Tape and just use a a small piece - 6 - 8" with some electrical tape to hold the ends?

That way you have the rest of it to replace it if it gets ugly or something?

You can get a really cool looking one or the cork - you got choices.

What do I know?

(wow, I just noticed - this is a really big "bump"!)

Murderface 06-30-09 09:18 PM

cut your bars and get a 650. then you'll spin barspins and you'll never worry about your top tube being dinged

jakerock 06-30-09 09:38 PM

I put electrical tape on...mostly to cover decals is this a bad idea based on what was said about "giving off gasses"? thanks.
