If you could...

What would be your custom/ultimate/bestest bike build ever.
I would like a nice clean Raleigh Professional or Super course with some simple 27" wheels and a Sugino crank/chainrings http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=444995 |
I really like my Jamis Sonik, would love it if the bottom bracket area/frame welds didn't creak. Would change out the wheels for something more obnoxious than what is already on there, cut the steerer tube down, and be done. 2 of the 3 I have control over.

I actually attained a bunch of what I wanted. You have to believe and turn that "could" into "can". :thumb:
But next on the list would be a NJS 3rensho. Then it would be an eco-pista. |
It would involve Waterford, Yamaguchi, or other custom builder and insane list of small builder, boutique parts.
And I would be totally afraid to ride it other than home-home loops for fear of theft and/or inclement weather. People come into the bike shop and drop $2-5k on the latest, greatest carbon fiber roadbike -- imagine if they put that money into a FG build... |

I think I would have a builder like Mark Nobilette, who custom built my steel lugged road racing bike in 1983, make me a custom ti track frame, and I'd build it up the most expensive exotic components I could find. Then, I'd mount it on the wall, and ogle it for hours while eating black caviar.

|
I don't think it would be a fixed gear. I enjoy the pieced together nature of my conversion fixed gears. Maybe a mountain bike but I'm not good enough yet to justify it.
|
7-11 merckx with shiny campy 11spd and enve everything and some expensive ass pair of hubs that are so loud noone would wanna ride with me
stanridge speed high street fg santa cruz bronson with all the crabons so i can bomb down a mountain and break myself in monumental fashion |

Or a Cinelli Laser on Shamals with dumb amounts of money put into every component. |
Scrod, that is beautiful.
|
road daily driver: Custom Ti frame from Holland, local builder. Full Enve components, shimano dura ace mechanical 11sp, dura ace SRM crankset, some carbon wheels
road racer: same, but with like a Tarmac Sworks frame, or some other sort of fancy CF frame Track: dunno, something nice? I'm not that knowledgeale about track components, or really just bike components in general. Def. something better than my Dolan Pre Cursa, maybe a Look? Oh, and with Zip 606 tubulars and some soft expensive tires FG/SS road: Custom Ti frame from Holland, local builder. Enve components, some 23mm wide alloy wheels with Dura Ace hubs and Vittoria Open Pave? tires (the 24mm wide ones with the green stripes) MTB: Custom Ti frame from Holland, local builder (see a trend here?), hardtail 26" (yeah I said it, NOT 29er), 120mm travel fox fork, 2x10 setup, whatever wheels. Dick around/Short ride/Neighborhood bike: 3rensho or Panasonic (because I think it's an unlikely, but recognizable brand), full NJS, cept some slightly swept risers with tarck grips, yeah! So basically, I want all my bikes to have Ti frames but the race bike and the dick around bike. |
Scrod's Raleigh is beautiful.
On a separate note, I would trade 2/3 of the bike components I already own AND foresake all those dream bike setups if I could get a 5% increase in FTP and lose 10lbs without changing my lifestyle. Those (seemingly) small gains would make me much happier with my middling racing career. I'm not into bikes nearly as much as most of you guys, or really most cyclists in general. Riding and racing bikes, very much so, but the machines themselves don't make a whole lot of difference or have much consequence ime, so meh |

That was on my list. Reasonably priced, non-trashed shamals are still eluding me after all these years. |
I've already owned most everything I've ever wanted to.
the only thing I haven't had is a ti frame, so that's on the list. I'd like to get a ti frame similar to my straggler geo- something that fits 700x45, threaded bb and horizontal dropouts. oh, and disc brakes. i ALMOST ordered a geekhouse last year, but Marty was running about 10mos at the time. I'm not that patient.... |
hamfoh got one, iirc didnt have the greatest experience with them. took long and didnt end up feeling right
id do firefly if i was getting Ti, they got that **** on lock\ come to think about it, instead of the merckx id get a Tomii built for me with cross geo, reynolds toobz, clearance for 45s, and a 7-11 merckx paintjob and all the other same expensive crap |

Yeah, and I'd do the same if I could be 6" taller and 30 years younger.

I would want fillet brazed stainless steel (like a Soma Triplecross) with a level top tube. Room for at least 40mm tires so I could do a bit of gravel and the $hite chipseal that predominates here.
Some Chris King bling and a Brooks of course. Oh and a cut down Jones H Loop in Titanium, just to be ******. |
An Experience is what I would dig.
I would sit at a drawing board with Nao Tomii and sketch away until we nailed it. Then I'd get to watch him measure, cut and braze. I'd get to ask questions and learn. And of course he'd let me sand a few final touches so I could say "I helped build it". :p http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7366/1...2e57dc2a_z.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5529/1...4271c93b_z.jpg |
I think I just had an orgasm.

Also, those fillets look great. |

"$2,500.00 for frame and fork." "Oh, you want to hang out and annoy me with questions too?" "That will put it at $4,500.00." |
