I just converted a Centurion LeMans and am using the stock crankset.

Unfortunately the aluminum spider is a one piece unit with both a 110mm and 185mm BCD and an integrated chain guard. Not to nice looking.

I am using the inner chainring, a 40t that bolts to the 110mm pattern (dashed line in diagram below)

I am considering cutting the outer portion of the spider away - mainly for looks. Here is a diagram.


I'd cut it at the red lines and of course finish the cut ends so they look nice and are smooth.

Would this weaken the spider? The outermost ring shown is the 'integrated' chainguard, maybe it provides some rigidity? But a chain ring bolted on the spider does as well.

Yes you can cut it.
Although the ring is a handy chain guard.
I left mine on.

I have considered that. Is it mainly helpful for shoelaces and long pants (never use either) or could a guard like this help stop a foot getting in the chainwheel/chain during an accident?

I also like not chopping the original parts as, as, as...hmm it just seems wrong. I have the same reluctance chopping the 38cm wide drop bars to convert them to bullhorn, since I eventually want something a little bit wider.

I haven't cut any metal, if I wanted I could put it all back together (never )

Anyway the outer chainring was removed and I like it the way it is, no chopping planned. I'm gonna keep the bars as they are for a while now too.
