Goose Island Beer Bicycle
I won this cool looking bike in a drawing from a local watering hole, and know absolutely nothing about single speed bikes. It looks like it has a flip-flop hub, which I will have to research to figure out how all that works, too. I haven't seen anything like it, but it looks like it would be fun to ride, although I am not fond of a front brake only bike. The handlebars are crazy short at 18 inches as well, which means they will have to get changed out as that is way too short. Either way, once I go through it all it should make a fun grocery getter or something...

You need a rear brake for when you are using the freewheel as it is set up in your pics, and you should have foot retention when you reverse (flip) the rear wheel when you are using the fixed cog. You also need to make sure the fixed cog and lockring are properly tightened before riding it.

You don't really "need" a rear brake. It's not a bad idea. But it's not imperative.

Legally, in most jurisdictions you have to be able to bring your bike to a skidding stop. How can you do that on a single speed with just a front brake? Ted shred the rear tire?
Yeah I guess I didn't think of that. But, I mean, i don't stop at stop signs, or stoplights, unless i have to. |

Sounds like a watering hole should provide a lifetime supply following the litigation. I mean lawyers thrive on SS's with single brake systems.
It'll be a fun bike, congrats.....just listen to the wisdom provided by these other folks. AND you d*mned kids start obeying traffic laws... don't make me bring this up at dinner tonight! |
I mean, tires are nice to have, but they're not really necessary.

That is a nice bike. Would not dump a lot of money into it, but slap on a rear brake if you wish and ride the heck out of it.
