Hard brake/reverse causes chain and cog noise

Just getting used to my first fixed gear bike that I built. Sometimes when I'm traveling above 15mph and apply a hard brake/reverse force on the cranks to slow down I hear my chain almost sound like it misses a tooth on the rear cog or chainwheel. I can't tell if it's from the front or back, but is that normal?

Is it because the tension on the chain is switching from the top line to the bottom and it's not perfectly lined up with the teeth? I have my tension on the chain pretty tight... Maybe too tight or not tight enough?

Is your cog and lockring tightened down snug? Sounds like it's slipping at the rear hub.

Are you completely locking up the wheel in a skid or applying pressure to slow down? My bike make a louder noise when slowing down but that's never been an issue, i think it has to do with chain wear on the cog and ring being different on the opposite side of the teeth.

Will check on that, thanks! I initially did tighten them down with a whip and an expensive pair of locking pliers, but maybe it's not tight enough

I've had it happen in both cases, but it usually has to be a pretty hard opposing force to get it to happen

I find most of my fix gears run rougher in backpressure mode than forward. I generally attribute that to the chain not being broken in with the teeth like it is when pedaling forward.

As far as the lockring goes: get a lockring spanner wrench. Park makes at least one. Pedro makes one I like better, their fix gear tool. These work far better than the best pliers.

Can't help you on any skidding or backpedaling in lieu of braking. I don't. My knees cost far more than brake pads so I intend to keep my OEMS and treat brake pads like cheap, disposable items meant to be used and abused. I have no idea what special care has to be taken with cogs, lockrings, etc to make bikes skiddable.

Ok I gave the chain a bit of slack, took it for a test ride, and it seems like it's fixed!
