For clipless shoes on a fixed gear, do you prefer shoes with a stiffer sole?
I'm shopping for clipless shoes that are primarily going to be used for a fixed gear. In the past, I always bought mountain bike shoes only because I used them on both my mountain and road bike...I also wanted a shoe that I could walk around in the city so having a recessed cleat was important.
This next pair is strictly for my fixed gear bike and will rarely get any use out of the saddle...so I'm buying a road specific shoe with a SPD-SL/Look style cleat.
For those that have used multiple styles of shoes (mountain, road, a more flexible sole vs stiff carbon sole), what did you prefer for fixed gear? Again, this isn't a shoe I need to walk around in.
I'm leaning towards a stiffer shoe since I figure it will help in back peddling/pressure to aid in braking.

A cycling shoe with a stiffer sole is always better, regardless of the type of bike you are riding. I have several fixed gear bikes, some for long distance non-stop riding, and others for urban riding with some time walking. I use serious carbon soled cycling shoes with road clipless pedals on the former, and walkable SPD shoes or regular shoes with straps on the latter. I also use my stiff cycling shoes on my serious geared road bikes.

Stiffer soles are more comfortable on the bike. The stiffer the sole, the more the force spreads out over the whole foot instead of one hot spot.

I plan on both.
For a 50 mile fixed training ride in the country, road shoes.
For screwing around down town, walking shoes with SPD cleats.
It takes < 5 minutes to swap pedals.

I used to be in the same boat, mtb shoes on my fixed gear. Slowly starting to get shoes with a stiffer sole. Makes a world of difference so far.

Thanks everyone. Just ordered a set of Shimano R171's. Shimano's always fit me well and figured it's a good stiff sole for the money.
Now I just need to choose between the Look Keo Classic 2s or Shimano 5800/105.

I like shimano pedals more. Look Keo cleats squeak after a while, but shimano has never done that to me before.

I've been using the original Look Delta cleats since they were introduced 30+ years ago. Much easier to clip in than SPD-SL and no squeaks !
