Don Walker

So I heard a rumor that might interest some of you Don Walker cognoscenti. Evidently a larger maker of track, road and tri bikes has expressed some interest in acquiring DW. The rumor is further supported by the alleged appearance of a one-off DW badged as something else that is being shown around the bike shops in SoCal.

Any of you heard or seen anything? Anybody compete at the Wildflower and see something orange with Don's signature on the TT?

Is June 1 the last day that someone can get a custom DW track bike that's actually badged as such?

Enquiring minds want to know.

As Brett and Wanda say on Corner Gas,
Scorch!

When your kid grows up and asks, "Dad, how come I can't build bikes using the Walker name?" you can tell him the story of Faliero Masi, California "bicycle" companies and how the Mondocino marque came to be.

emayex 04-29-05 04:38 PM

ha...i cant top that

Bing 04-29-05 04:47 PM

He could always build under another name, like Donatello L'Escursionista. Gives it a nice faux Italian feeling.

I, for one, cherish the thought of knowing the manufacturer of things I own, use and love. While I do not yet have the opportunity to patronize local, known or respectable people for all my material needs, being able to read about the experiences of a bike designer/builder is a blessed opportunity.

Bikeophile 04-29-05 09:09 PM

i would like to order one of the slave labour Don Walker Frames. Can I use my Walmart Credit Card?

pitboss 04-29-05 09:16 PM

I am seriously looking forward to the new line of DW Tennis shoes made by eager 9 year olds! Go free enterprise!

But they only remain eager until age 11. After that they turn into a bitter, jaded workforce.

Joking aside, congrats Don. I hope the new, yet unnamed, venture is a success. You've worked hard for it and by hosting, organizing, etc the handbuilt show, you show that you support the passionate builders in the industry.

Hmmm.. Capital "IF". Is that a hint? Will Don go bicoastal? Somerville very lovely in the Spring!

Not according to what I was told about the alleged orange bike at the Wildflower.

bostontrevor 04-30-05 10:47 AM

I was being facetious. But I'm curious about this alleged orange bike. What do you know? PM me if you don't want to post here.

SamHouston 04-30-05 10:54 AM

Early March in San Jose eh? and still cold as crap here then....I think I now know how I'll be scheduling my traveling salesman stint next year

ink1373 04-30-05 11:46 AM

i've always wondered about builders' personal rides. perhaps you'd like to post some of your rides in the picture thread, don? (i don't think anyone will be upset if some of them are geared.)

There might be some pictures out there that I might have seen. And the alleged company appears to be showing it as a demo to LBS's in California for bookings in anticipation of the buyout.

"Merger" is the appropriately sensitive term.
