Are Bikes Direct Single Speed Bikes Good?

Hi,

I've been wanting a steel bike with race geometry and thought the BikesDirect single speed bikes look as usual good value. Any thoughts on if they are any good? If so, what is the best, the Kilo or Motobecane Track? The others like the Dawes SST and Windsor Hour seem more upright less race geometry.

Thanks in advance.

Never heard of them.

This must be satire.

Thanks. I did use the search function before posting. The problem is there are lots of threads about the Kilo and some about the Motobecane, but none really comparing the two.

This'll be fun to read

Watch out for the pedal threads, I hear they are tricky.

Sometimes searches on the forums are tricky. It's often better to just google "kilo vs motobecane" and you'll find tons of links from this forum on the front page.

Also you can limit google's results to this site by adding "site:bikesdirect.net"

Try it.

Isn't Aventon Mataro the new Kilo tt?

prooftheory 09-28-15 06:35 AM

I thought it was the new leader, but it is closer to that price range.

TejanoTrackie 09-28-15 06:38 AM

Isn't Retrogression the new BikesDirect ?

Nagrom_ 09-28-15 06:47 AM

I bet your boy Scrod loves the comparison.

Inpd 09-28-15 06:55 AM

Thanks for the positive help.

For the life of me, after looking through all those threads I can't find info on weights of the bike.

Also people keep on saying the Kilo has a race geometry but an owner said it was quite sluggish.

himespau 09-28-15 07:00 AM

In your many other threads on the topic, you've already made it clear you think bikesdirect is the best deal around. Just pick the one that best fits your budget and move on.

The kilo tt has classic track geometry. I rode one on the track for a while. They are quick handling just flexy.

As I always say go to your local bike shop (LBS) and check out what they have or can get for you. It will be a much better experience than having to bring whatever cheap-o bike BD sends you there and pay extra money to get it built up.

But what if your LBS doesn't sell any inexpensive SSFG bikes and is unwilling to order them for you. Online vendors like BD serve a useful purpose in this regard, and they are better than many others that sell really junky stuff. Just sayin'.

Then find one that does or if that is not an option at all for whatever reason than buy online if you must there are some smaller shops like Retrogression that are brick and mortar who also have an online shop and specialize in SS/FG. People tend to jump straight online to places like BD or Amazons for their bike purchases instead of first trying local and then if not that trying a brick and mortar shop with an online store.

Knowledge from a bike shop is invaluable and BD or Amazon cannot provide that.

Some bike shops are helpful and knowledgeable, and some are staffed by worthless dicks. I've supported my LBS over the years and spent more there than online, but even they have their limits. Not everyone needs to get help from an LBS when making a simple purchase.

Seconding Nagrom, I liked my #kilott a lot it just flexed all over the place in a sprint. For street riding it was nice and smooth.

Thanks @nagrom and @Huffandstuff

What does the Kilo TT weight? When you say its flexy, your referring to if you put the hammer down it flexes around the BB?

Also, if you have any experience how does it compare to the other BD single speed bikes (i.e. Hour, Motobecane) in terms of handling?
