Anyone switch to loose bearings in their Sugino 75 bottom bracket?
 
I'll be installing an unsealed/njs 75 bottom bracket next week and was thinking of ditching the caged bearings for loose balls. There is a bearing supply store near me so I'll just match the size up (1/4') and buy a bunch of the high graded bearings/extras.

Anyone make this switch and feel it was worth the effort?

No real advantage that I can see and a lot more difficult to service the bearings on the drive side (fixed cup).

Are you going to be riding it on the street? I wouldn't bother if that's the case, and even more so if the weather/environmental condition in your area tend to be wet or dusty. Just stick to sealed cartridge bearings unless it's your velodrome bike. Even then cartridges don't hold you back. You won't notice any difference when you're riding your bike. In fact, you probably won't even be able to tell when the bike is on the workstand either. Loose bearing BBs and hubs are for guys chasing tenths and thousandths of a second. Everyone else should just stick with cartridge.

I have uncaged bearings in now. I can't notice a difference. If you really want to, I'll trade my loose bearings for your caged ones haha

If the loose bearings are less money than the caged ones, go for it. Installation is easy if you use grease. Not so much if you do it dry or oil only.

OP already has the caged bearings. Why bother ?

Some like to replace ball bearings after a period of time. Preserves the races. I have had some where the assembly was significantly improved with new bearings.

Loose bearings not worth effort. Unsealed bearings not worth the effort. Sealed cartridge bearings a great improvement for cyclists, they should not be ignored.

Depends on the condition and quality of the bearings. The bearings that are supplied with the Sugino 75 BB are very good quality and if serviced periodically will not deteriorate significsntly. So, it depends on the condition of the caged bearings that the OP has obtained and if they are in fact new there is no reason to discard them. The bearings in my Sugino 75 BB are in excellent condition after 9 years of hard use.

I agree. I have some Campy Record hubs from the 70's that are still going strong! The Stronglight BB from the same period is also great!

In my experience, this is mostly due to cleaning/re-greasing. Like chains and cogs, bearings and races go together. If only changing the bearings brings a significant improvement, then the races are probably messed up a little too.

Well that depends on the material and the treatment. Often designer will make sure one of the wear components is designated a "sacrificial" part for ease of service. If you wait too long, your description I appropriate. Campagnolo Record hub races are much harder than the bearings, allowing bearing replacement with little to no impact to race wear degradation
