hi,

i just picked up an immaculate campy super record 165 STRADA crankset ($85 w/ dustcaps!), and now i need a ring for it.

i think i've read somewhere that not all 144 bcd track rings will fit, but i'm having a hard time confirming that in my searches. can anyone tell me if there are right/wrong rings for this?

They will fit but may not match up with the spider arms

also, what would it mean for a ring to fit but not match the spider arms? that sounds like the ring does not fit.

I think he's meaning that the bolt holes will line up, and you can use them, but there would be a little lip between the chainring and the spider where one is thicker than the other.

But that's just a guess...

Campy Strada Pista cranks have been around for a very long time. Sometime in the late 70's they changed the BCD from 151 to 144. If the cranks you have are early ones you will need a 151 bcd chainring. If they are 144 any 144 ring should fit them. 151 rings are a little harder to come by....perhaps the reason for the sweet deal.

there's such a thing as "strada pista"? --pista means track and strada means road. they do a combo?

also, mine are definitely not pista cranks. they are stradas, with room for 2 144bcd road rings.

There are two flavors of Strada cranksets. I've had both, there are the "road" variety, which have a lip on the back for mounting a second chainring, and there are the "bmx" variety, which don't have the lip. Most people who have the road variety mill or grind the lip off if using them in a fixed/ss application.

I have never seen or heard of a "Pista Strada" crankset. The Strada crankset is almost identical to the Pista crankset, but not exactly the same. The Pista crankset is a bit thinner and lighter. The difference isn't very noticable, one says "Pista" on the back, the other says "Strada".

That said, either one will fit any 144 bcd ring, however it may look ugly if you get a ring that isn't a campy 144 bcd.

i think i remember from my searches that you have stradas on one of your bikes, and that you milled off the back lip. any advice for this procedure?

also, what spindle length gets the 42mm chainline on a 68mm bb shell?

Dremel. I have three sets of Strada cranks, two bmx and one road. I use a Campy Pista BB with a 111 spindle length.
