Ti fixed/SS frame makers?

Its hard to sort through all the BS and such to find builders/companies that offer Ti frames with horizontal dropouts. I know Matt Chester builds, and so does Spicer cycles. Help me out with other names out there, please!

horizontal dropouts or track ends?

bandregg 05-03-05 11:44 AM

Seven will make any of their frames with horizontal drop outs according to their website.

track ends (no RD hanger)

chimblysweep 05-03-05 11:51 AM

any custom builder will make you one. i mean, vanilla, jonny cycles, circle cycles, etc...

sohi 05-03-05 11:53 AM

serotta!

btw. I dont think spicer builds the frames. their titanium selection looks
like a 1:1 copy of a chinese manufacturers catalog (XICAD or something)

bostontrevor 05-03-05 11:57 AM

Independent Fabrication

thanks guys, i think i'll just save up for a matt chester frame someday.

Talk to Mark at Habanero. I just bought a custom Ti frame from him, and I am very happy with it. Not SS/fixed, but he can do it for you.

Moots.

For the same money you could get a custom Calfee fixed (mybike) ti dropouts, lugged carbon frame. Tough, light, comfy, fast.

Ti is nice but check the pro peloton for ti frames - nada. Carbon is the best overall material.

redfooj 05-03-05 01:39 PM

habanero also imports from XACD and double the price

I would call up DEAN USA also to check if they would build you a track frame with track ends.

But, overall, for good quality Ti track, you will need to go custom. Which will run near or upwards of $1,600.

I personally think Ti is by far the best material for a bike overall. I love my custom Dean road bike. Its gone through sweat, snow, rain and its taken a pounding. Still looks pristine.

Carbon is the material du jour for the pro peloton for two reasons: weight and marketing. Most bike companies want to show their best, and their top of the line frames are usually carbon.

And usually, the riders ride what they are given, not necessarily want they want to ride, or would ride if they were paying for it out of pocket.

That's why Ti is so great, for a high initial investment, you get a lifetime frame free of paint chips or rust. Also in case you crash, Ti is repairable, just like steel, whereas with carbon, its catastrophic.

I'm not riding in the pro peloton, are you? I have to buy my rides, and maintain them too. I like them to last a lifetime. I own a steel race bike and all, but I'm not into carbon all that much. It looks too fragile.

Ti is appealing because you seem to get the best attributes of all the other available materials (steel, carbon, aluminum).

Wow, that looks interesting. It's too bad there aren't more pictures of track frames here or, um, any. Do you know where I might take a look at some?

Does he really only do 130 mm rear spacing? Why?

chzman 05-04-05 06:26 AM

according to the website he does, but it is all custom so he might be persuaded to go 120mm.

Whenever you evaluate what the "Pros" are riding, keep in mind that they HAVE to ride what is provided by the sponsors and it may not be their preference. I know semi pro sponsored riders that purely hate their rides, but ride em' anyway cause dats' what they were given.

Garbage. Different company altogether. XACD looks like they can hit a nice price point, but they are not as nice as the habanero frames. Personally, I'm happy to pay a little extra to get a better frame with a warrantee from a guy that I know will stand behind the product he sells.
