Which cranks to keep? Sugino 75 vs. Miche
 

I have been slowly accumulating parts to build up a track bike. I was looking for a bare frame for a while, but when a deal came along on a complete 2004 KHS flite I figured I should give up the search and just buy the bike, tear it apart and build it back together the way I want.

I already know that I'm going to sell the stock wheels (anyone want to buy them?) and replace them with a Promax/open pro set I picked up a while ago.
The bars are being replaced with a set of Nitto B123 Cro-Mos

But I can't decide what to do about the cranks. Its currently got the Sugino 75 cranks on there, but I have a brand new set of Miche Primatos and an extra Miche chainring lying in the basement. And I know if I have an extra crank lying around, I'll just want to build up another bike. :D
So keep the Sugino's for the all-Japanese theme?
Or the Miche for the multiple gearing options on the cheap?

Too bad track season is pretty much over. I'm going to have to wait until fall to ride this thing.

If you go for the Miche and want to get rid of the Sugino, I'd probably buy them. I'm not having much luck finding old-school Campys.

I like the Suginos. I thought they used a different bottom bracket than the Miche cranks..

+ more BB options than the Miche
+ clean minimal design
+ stiff as f**k

Its a great crankset, don't think people give it enough props as it comes stock on some off the shelf bikes.

if you don't end up selling the suginos to jordache, how about selling me the Miche chainring :)

im curious.. is this compared to the miche not being stiff as f*ck.. or.. you happen to have only ridden the suginos but like how stiff they are.. that sounds sarcastic bt im serious.. im trying to figure this one out my self and i hate flex

sugino's, for sure. the bcd is 144 which is track specific.

i think, and i could be wrong, that the miche bcd is either 130 or 135.

I've never regretted hoarding extra parts. You never know when you might want to build up a rain bike or a commuter for someone special. Right now, I have enough extra parts that I'm just waiting for another frame to arrive.

I say keep them.

Here's my 2cents and comparison

Both of these cranksets are in the running for "best value" cranksets. Neither are too expensive for what you get.

Here is my comparison:

Bottom Bracket: TIE - Suginos use any Shimano tapered 109BB and Miche's use any standard 102Campy BB (as well as the 107Miche BB). But the Miches work much better with the Campy option

BCD - Sugino wins here with the 144BCD. But how often do you change your big ring? You already have extra Miche rings you say, so this really shouldn't be an issue. Sure more options for Sugino, but its not like its hard to find Miche compatible rings (Miche and TA both make them)

Stiffness TIE - I've ridden both Miche and Sugino 75's and I've found very little flex in either.

Look (sexiness) Miche wins. They are so much nicer looking in my opinion. But the Sugino's have a nice old school look to them

Price Tie. Both of these retail on average around $165-$170USD. You can obviously find deals for either.

So my suggestion would be to keep whichever compliments the rest of your bike setup.

Ahhh, differing opinions, just what I expected.
I was aware of the BB issues with the Miche. I hadn't figure out a solution yet.
Personally I think the suginos are kind of ugly, but they fit in well with the bike.

Anyway, track season is over since our velodrome is indoors. Now that its sunny, the raodies are all outside.

The new miche use 144bcd and are available in anodized colors.. dunno if there is another difference.

The old Miche 135bcd cranks had an odd deal where the chainring bolts screwed directly into the chainring and not a receptor end. Thus, you ran the risk of stripping a chainring and rendering it useless, instead of just messing up a chainring bolt.
