Full disclosure, not mine... but one of the managers of Big Shark from STL came down to my city for a 3-day long set of races recently. We met randomly and ended up hanging out a good bit while he was in town. I finally got around to uploading the horrible blurry pics I took of his beautiful bike, and I can promise you that I do not do the color justice.

Custom steel and carbon from Fe Cycles. Full Zipp setup (needs to flip that stem, though!) and Sram Rival 1x11. 54t in the front lol.

i found my non aero da levers so this thing is slowly coming together.

Why is that torque wrench loosening or is the toggle backwards on that wrench?

Because I didn't know that Shimano put a shim in the slot in the crankarm, presumably to prevent damage in shipping. I got the crank arm half way torqued and then noticed a piece of metal sticking out - the shim which had cocked when I had removed one of the crank pinch bolts prior to assembly.

Didn't feel like walking across the garage to get the hex key so I just used the torque wrench to take the arm off. That's when I decided to snap a pic.

True to form, I read the directions after I was done and saw the note to take the shim out before installation. You can see the shim circled in the diagram below FWIW

You're not supposed to remove that piece, it's a safety tab that keeps the cranks in place in case the hex bolts loosen. Theres a slot in the spindle where the tab fits into and you're supposed to push that in after you preload using the nds plastic bolt thing.

Edit: Just checked the online docs and no, it says to keep it in place and explains how to do it as Muffin Man said. They are available online for $4 if I can't find it in the garbage can.

Just finished this build. Its an 86(?) Pinarello Montello. Built up Campy except for the front derailleur, Thats temporarily suntour. My campy derailleur was ruined when I was hit by a car a few years back on a very large Colnago. I haven't had time to ride it (aside from a 10 minute shakedown) or take any decent photos but here she is!

The color is Prismatic Powders Illusion Blue Berg applied by Custom Coaters in Marietta, Georgia. It's a two step process which activates when the "Illusion" top coat is applied. A fine metal flake gives it an electric glow in some lighting conditions.

The fork is original with a new Cane Creek 40 headset. Groupset is 105. Fizik saddle and Thompson seatpost were reused and matching Thomson seatpost collar and stem were added for style points. I'm waiting on a Thomson top cap and shim so that the entire stem area is black.

I've wanted an FSA K-Wing compact bar for a long time. It was a PITA to cable but if the short debug rides in the neighborhood are any indication it will be well worth it.

Bearings and freehub were replaced on existing Mavik Ksyrium SL wheels. These converted from 9 speed to 11 speed with the removal of a spacer - pretty happy about that.

I wrenched everything myself except for truing the wheels and learned a lot in the process. 18.4 lbs as pictured.

thomson requires like, a 5mm spacer above the stem.
props for throwing that triple in the trash where they belong. i guess.

I love what you did with the bike from the color to that bar and tape job. The only thing that bugs me is that fugly 105 crank. Source of my opinion? I have the same one on my Felt Z5. It is an absolute eyesore on an otherwise beautiful bike. Yours and mine.

There is a 3mm spacer there now. I've ordered some spacers so that I can get it right.

Triple served me well for 16 years and tens of thousands of miles. I'd have retained the whole 9 speed group I could find matched 52/40/30 rings and a front shifter in decent condition.



Agree about the cranks. The black 105 cranks look out of place on the Felt. Overpowers the whole bike for some reason.

Right now the 105 group is $435 at Ribble and had been up to $465. I saw the price dip to $311.11 just after Brexit and took that as a sign. Ugly works for me at that price. :D

Took it out for a real ride today, about 35 miles. Performs adequately.

Had a stiff Sram Power Link but it seemed to have worked itself free and quieted down. 53-11 gear is basically useless for me. Just a touch of cable stretch now that it has been on the road - I'll adjust it tonight and retorque all the bolts.

The bar is super comfy but the exposed top makes me nervous about slipping in the wet.

Made a few little changes to the road bike since purchase. New road contact rubbers, increased hydration apparatus, attached magnetic computational device, and replaced saddle pole.
