Is this really what we want?
Generally I know cyclists to be compassionate, caring people. All of my coaches were basically my best friends, my team mates my rocks. Strangers on the trails smile and wave, rivals on the race course lend a gel. So we cyclists on this forum have a lot to live up to. Why are so many of you so cold to new comers? I'm coming into the SS community after years with the roadies, and many of you have been outright rude.
I'm not trying to make this about me, I don't want your apologies (in fact I fully expect to hear more snarky comments). I just want to ask you guys why you have to be so guarded, why you have to interrogate someone for claiming to love the same sport you love, instead of welcoming them in? It's not a criminal offense to not know as much as you might want, and why in the hell do we have a forum like this if we're not supposed to ask for help? Try to embody the kindness that cycling has built itself around, welcome people in and try to help them get immersed in this amazing community we're lucky enough to be a part of. It honestly made me extremely sad to see how the majority of you guys greet a newcomer. I'm waiting for all the hateful replies... maybe you'll prove me wrong. We'll see. |

Usually racers are hardened people, focused on beating an opponent, no matter what it takes. You strike me as far too delicate and emotional for a successful career in racing.
Don't go into Law or Politics, they are mean people too. |
Seriously.
You're being a baby. |

I don't know if that's how biking is, in the real world or not, but that's definitely how internet forums work. Buck up.

Actually I can agree with that. I guess it's just an unfair expectation to think people on the web could be as nice as people "in the real world". Still sad though.
Roll with the punches Nancy. |

Dude... who are you? I mean have you ever met a professional cyclist, or are you going off of some magazine article you read? Between my coaches, my experiences riding with people like US national champion Timmy Duggan, and the many many Cat 1 riders I've worked with, I've met maybe 3 "hardened" over people. Even then, they aren't mean - they're just quiet, shy. Again, cyclists are some of the kindest, most caring people I've ever met. But I guess I can only speak to the cyclists in my state, maybe where ever you come from they all happen to be jerks. Who knows? |

OP, my 2 cents for what it's worth, your post had a meaningless title, vague question, and lots of extra details that could be perceived to be try-hard bragging. The bored interneterati are going to have a bit of fun with this every time. I'm not saying it's your fault, just explaining how the internet works.
If you have a question, just ask it in a straightforward manner with all the relevant context and nothing more, and you'll get only sweetness and light. |
are you a cool fixed gear guy or a nerdy fixed gear guy? (sarcasm)

Personally, your first thread was strange considering you claimed you were such a seasoned racer but were asking for a bike that allows you to go fast..... then the 3 bikes you researched were some brands that aren't perceived as particularly desirable in this forum. Actually I'm surprised no one replied with #kilott or mentioned the Wabi Lightning or even a lower end Fuji track bike.
The responses you got were actually fairly mild. If you can't handle that....well, I'd consider lurking a bit longer and getting used to the community first before getting butt hurt. |
Although he did bring it on himself, and he didn't read the warning label, you do have to admit this is one of the rougher sections of BF. However, he could always go try the roadie section or the "safety" section, post up a silly thread, and see what happens.... Hopefully, if he really wants a SS he sticks around, reads up a bit, and tries asking the question again in a way they will get him the types of answers he is looking for.... If he really is serious...
