Benefit for Torrin Attn: SF/Bay Area riders!

okay, so for those of you following the thread in the advocacy forum, you already know what's going on, for those of you who aren't, go read that thread: https://www.bikeforums.net/advocacy-safety/105818-update-lucklust.html

so the poop on what's going on, because we'll need flyers wicked soon, and since i got back to work tomorrow through next monday, and Torrin can't see, and i think neither of us have great graphic design skills to start with, we need someone with some time on their hands to do up a flyer and post it at some LBSes in SF.

The plan is to get a bunch of people to sign form letters, or write their own to the DA and hand deliver them on the afternoon of 5/25 (two wednesdays from now) en masse with media coverage and police approval. After that, roll on over to 19 Broadway in Fairfax for a benefit/party/show/raffle thing. The raffle will begin at 7pm, and last until...whenever it lasts. we're still not sure what we'll have as this has basically come together in the last two days. We need as much support as possible for this, to make as big a spectacle for the city of San Rafael as possible, but we cannot cause a ruckus!

A copy of the letter that we're asking people to print out and sign and bring to the event can be found in the thread on the advocacy forum, please check it out. If you can't make it, PM me for my mailing address and send it to me, or get it to me some other way, and I'll make sure it gets to the DA. I cannot stress enough that we need as many bodies as possible to show up in support of this to send the message that this type of aggressive behavior on the road will not stand!

Any other ideas about how to get the word out would be greatly appreciated! If we could have a web address or a link to the letter text that people could go to to download and print it out, or should we do one letter with a ton of signatures....this is the first time i've been involved with something like this, so i'm not sure exactly how to go about it.

Torrin has been super appreciative of everything that everyone on the boards has been doing to help him out.

Torrin, I couldn't help notice in the thread quoted below that you need better software. I would be more than happy to donate some money towards it and I am sure others on here would as well. Maybe someone should set up a simple webpage or just a paypal account for this?

Oh my ****ing god. I've just spent the last few hours listening to the dumbest computer voice in the world reading this thread to me. It reminds me of the 'Say it Sam' program I had on my Apple II E 15 years ago. My favorite part is at the end of each post when it says 'SPAM!'

As you might have noticed, I have a stupid computer reader program. I can't afford a real one, so I'm using the demo version of a crappy one. I don't even really know how to use it, so it's pissing me off. It shuts off every 30 minutes, so I have to constantly restart the computer. BOO.

I love everyone here. This outpouring of support is amazing. I'm at a loss for words (for once). That's probably ok, since there aren't enough words to describe how grateful I am. This is a very difficult time for me, and knowing that I have so many people in my corner is so very inspiring. Haha, I'm actually crying right now. What a wuss.

I'm sick of hearing this damn voice saying every single letter I type (it can't keep up with the typing, so it's got this weird lagging noise that's extremely grating), so I'm going to log off after I post a brief message in the SS/FG forum.

Again, I miss you all, and will check in from time to time.

Torrin

I'm in for help with the software as well....Perhaps anyone who knows Torrin personally can help him get a paypal account...we can send $ to that for whatever program he needs (or anything else for that matter)

A helpful suggestion: if you're writing a message for Torrin to read, try not to quote too much of a previous message and try to keep your message brief. Screen readers are slow, particularly when you're first starting out.

Torrin you rock and we all love you man.

All of us do.

When you can, let us know what can help you best. I know it's your strongest want to be independent, and that's an inspiration! But, how can we help you achieve it? Let the forum know, so we can help.

I'll send some cash along for Torrin. Also, can we get a copy of the letter for people to sign at the afterparty of the Scavenger Scramble this weekend? Maybe we can take donations there too...

Let me tell you something about Torrin.

Torrin “Danger” Arnold, as he is officially known, is probably the understatement of what it is to be a good human in this day and age. He neither tries to fit in nor does he try to stand out. He does what he thinks is right, works hard, and stands up for what he believes in. He signed up to do the AIDS ride in 2004. He didn’t advertise much, he didn’t toot his horn. A few on this board tried to help him out. He got hit by a drunk driver about a month prior, had his jaw cracked, teeth messed up. But he STILL DID THE RIDE. He ended up eating, what I estimate to be, about 1k in cost for fund raising for the ride. In an email, he would say if he lost money, and he said he didn’t mind. He was a student and felt he’d have a life time to pay it off. In his mind, he was working for a cause, for those less fortunate, for those that need it. And he road from San Francisco to Los Angeles Fixed.

Quite the man, really.

Now, take in mind you know the details. We can swing that story around. But suffice to say his sight was stolen from him. Legal battles, financial problems all aside.

Torrin has not given up being a full force person. He now wants to set up resources for injured cyclist. Change laws. Let me correct my self. He doesn’t want to. In talking to him, he is GOING to set up resources. He is going to get laws changed. He is going to still be an athlete (he hinted at future activities that I’ll let develop on their own). He is upset, but not bitter, not resigned, he has not given up. And his focus of living is still helping others. He is positive. He is strong. He still goes out to be with friends and others. Hell, Torrin still swears he’s the best looking man in Marin County. And if you think you can prove him wrong… Just show him. His idea to get the person responsible is not about justice for him, but to him, it’s a manner by which to set the example up to protect other cyclist.

He’s a better human, a better man, a better person than I could ever hope to be. Talking with him reminds me that there is so much potential inside people, and that nothing can really get in the way. I am truly humble when I think about him. I think, ironically, if anything this wrong were to happen to, the best person would be Torrin. Why? He’s fiercely independent, he’s determined, dedicated, up beat, strong, and ready for the challenge. He is the best person to take on this task. He is still talking about supporting the AIDS ride, in spite of everything that went on, he’s still wanting to help others.

Honestly, it nearly puts me to tears. I avoided the threads for a few days because I really didn’t want to think about it.

I challenge everyone not to forget the cause that Torrin has taken up. I challenge everyone to Hoist a Flag for Torrin. Pass the hat, sure. Write a letter? Sure. If he starts any type of organization to help out cyclist, be an arm for him in a different city. Is he gonna be in your town? A room and a tandem so he can cycle and hang out. Something. Anything. Sight robbed, but spirit sailing. Take this one on for the long haul.

What am I gonna do? I dunno. I’m still screwed up that it happened. In fact, in some ways, I’m afraid to ride. But who can have fear if he does not? As things develop, I’m gonna help out as I can. Think to your self, what can you do? After we get past our own anger and disgust, surely our minds can come up with something. This is everyone’s cause, in one way or another.

Let me tell you something about Torrin.

He’s what a lot of us should be. He’s got plans. We don’t owe him. We owe ourselves.

i'll be there next week. im taking the day off work. Does anyone want to roll with me? We can take our bikes on a bus or a train of some sort. I also have a car which i would be willing to drive if a few people want a ride from SF or Oakland.

alright folks, here is just one more awesome thing that Torrin is doing that proves he's a stand-up guy. Basically, he wants to start up a bay area-wide non-profit to help out injured cyclists. BUT!!! he needs to call it something!!! suggestions are being solicited on the advocacy forum in this thread:

you can also paypal torrin some funds to his paypal addy, which is lucklust at yahoo dot com.

So what do we do to help Torrrin in the long run in an environment where only lawsuits provide?
I have a niece who is quadraplegic after a Venezuelan bus accicident. After the insurance comanies are done, what is left.
My niece receives help from a benevolent society. What about Torrin?
If he gets a nice fat settlement, that may help for a while.............?

There may nothing to do for him other than donations and well wishing for some legal retribution. In the long run Torrin's looking to start an Injured Cyclist Foundation. See here...
