Looking for new wheels

I'm converting one of my old bikes to single speed and need new wheel set 27 to 700c that isn't going to break my budget. I am 6'07 and my weight is usually between 265 and 300 so wheel strength is always a concern to me. Is 48h spokes overkill? Also does anyone have wheels with the hubs used on this set.

There is a Clydesdale sub-section for bigger guys that has lots of wheel info.
Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg)

If you go on the search page...
Search Forums - Bike Forums
Type: wheels
and "Search Titles only"
Then in the lower section scroll down for the clydesdale forum.

Tons of wheel threads/spoke count, etc..

Those wheels are heavy as ****, but are probably pretty strong. The hubs (rebranded Formula) are good, I have them on one of my bikes and never had any issues with them.

The Clydesdale forum doesn't have post's about fixed speed bike wheels especially for my frame's rear wheel which is 126mm. Is there a decent wheel set (preferably 36h) under $200 that anyone can recommend? thanks....

Thanks for the responses. I want to put 700 x 35 tires so I think I might end up getting these.

I've actually put riders in the 400lbs+ range on a max of a 40h rear wheel with great results. One thing to consider is that as you go to a 48h rim, you're removing a fair bit more metal from the web of the rim for the additional spoke holes. That actually reduces the "burst strength" of the rim, which is essential to the rim's ability to hold tires at high pressure. What we will occasionally see is that a wider tire at higher pressrue will crack the rim down the web between the spoke holes.

For a 300lbs rider, I would have no problem putting you on a properly hand built 36h wheelset, on a rim as light as our Dyad, which has been a long time favorite among clydesdales, touring cyclists, and tandem teams but still comes in at a reasonable 520g.

Weve got some pre-configured wheelsets here under our clyde section, and we're able to customize the build for you a bit as wel: Velocity - Wheels, Clydesdale
