Help me find my pants please.

Help me find my pants please.

I could use some help please. There are no big name sporting goods stores in my area, and the little places don't have what I am looking for. I am trying to find some pants for cool weather biking, but I am unfamiliar with the cycling specific garment industry. Actually, they don't need to be cycling specific if I can find the right thing.

Here is what I am seeking.

1. NOT race tight, jewel crushing team kit stuff.
2. Not tissue paper thin. Durable.
3. Preferably without chamois.
4. Snug/zippered calf/ankle for obvious reasons.
5. Pockets would be a bonus, but lack of is not a deal breaker.
6. They don't need to be sub-arctic warm, just for days when shorts just aren't quite enough.

Maybe there are pants for MTBing? Or "multi-sport" pants?

I found some on Amazon but the reviews/sizing was sketchy (lots of returns).

If you can recommend some brands I'll do the research. Are there features that are "must haves" that I should know about? Gimmicks to avoid?

Thanks for any help.

Check out Chrome's Folsom and Union shorts. They hit the majority of your bullet points and there's free returns.

Don't forget to give them your email for a 15% off code too.

If I don't have shorts on, I have tights on. Riding down into the 40's in shorts is not uncommon for me so anything colder than that and it is time to get the tights out. Not the most attractive look ever because I wear shorts over them, just black plain athletic shorts. Haven't found pants yet that are comfortable to ride in.

Are tights an outer garment? The nomenclature is part of what is throwing me. Some of the stuff I see looks like undergarments for under kits.

I checked them out. They are shorts and I'm looking for pants.

$120.00 for shorts? Um......no.

Same thing but shorter. And I said matched *most* of your requirements. Pants were not one of them.

I have a pair of their folsom shorts and their warranty and customer support is pretty awesome.
I'm on my third exchanged pair where the "defects" were on the line of wear and tear and workmanship. They always give me the benefit of the doubt.

So you just blew past the most critical criteria?

For $120.00 they should pick them up, launder them, and return them, pressed, in a nice box, twice weekly, for life.

These are what I bought recently before the end of winter. At this price, you simply cannot go wrong. I always wear something like a pair of athletic shorts over them especially when I ride to work, just for modesty, as I work in a hospital and don't feel comfortable walking in with a high potential for junk visibility.

I've never had an MTB but I've never worn bike shorts either.

Today I charged around town in secondhand Farah slacks.

I'd just buy a pair of thermal tights and wear them under your shorts, it's what I ride 100% of the time in the winter and keeps you warm enough for the PNW 35 degrees and rain garbage.

Pearl Izumi I believe makes a rather budget friendly set of thermal tights that has a chamois or non chamois version if I remember right.

I was under the assumption that each criteria were weighted the same.

At REI they sell Kuhl brand pants and they might work. Also, in their Novara line they have overpants (they are like bike shorts, but looser, somewhat waterproof on front, breathable in back, and pants by length). I use the Novaras to commute in during the winter and the are great under 50-55 degrees.

Thanks. I'm looking for something more athletic and less "trousers/slacks" style. Without going full spandex. The running and jogging pants are looking more and more like my ticket.

Look for running pants. Avoid anything with "open hem" or "open bottom" which can get caught in a chain. A "cuffed bottom" is better but still might be a bit baggy on the lower leg. "Tapered" is a keyword - narrow on the lower leg. Anything with leg zippers is going to be higher priced.

Stay away from cotton. If you must do cotton then at least do a poly/cotton blend.

Nike KO Slacker is relaxed fit but tapered at the bottom.
Nike® Ko Slacker Fleece Pull on Pants - JCPenney

Nike Academy Dry Fit looks like a really nice garment. "Dry Fit" is wicking to keep you dry when you perspire, pull the moisture away from your skin which is important in cooler conditions. Tapered + pockets. Price is right too.
Nike® Academy Pant - JCPenney

Good luck.

Swrve makes some really nice shorts, I can only imagine that their pants are the same quality.

The shorts are super stretchy and have a lot of little details that make them really nice for riding, and I think their pants are just a longer version basically. Durable seams, zippered rear pocket, pen pocket on each front pocket, super stretchy so they don't restrict your movement at all on a bike, and they make them in a couple different cuts.

swrve ? durable cotton SLIM TROUSERS

i very much enjoy my twin six 3/4 manpris, theyre insanely durable and id really have to try and destroy them. any 3/4 length mtb jammers should be the ticket

otherwise i just wear some pos old navy track pants, and even then theyre usually too much unless its below 30º*.

all you really need is something to cut the wind and it dont take much
