Um....
I'm all for speed. I love going fast. But as speeds increase and road conditions become sketchy, paper thin clothing needs to be replaced with something protective. At least for me they do.
 |
That's a Monster Media rider, probably on GMR. I think I see national champion stripes on his sleeve too. One of SoCal's finest :).
Also what he's doing is fairly routine for a road rider, even a non competitive one. Having said that, what he's done is certainly dangerous. I've crashed at 45 mph on a decent before and the road rash took a LONG time to heal. |
Why is this in SSFG?
|
Good question.
EDIT: Probably because he wants to discuss it among the users of this forum, and not the total tools over in Road Cycling. It's not at all SS/FG related, but until enough people raise a stink about it we'll just let it pass. |

I've gone about 55 downhill on a road bike in kit. I got a nasty high speed wobble that threw my hands off the bars, crotch slammed to the top tube, left knee hit the front wheel which was enough to kill the wobble so luckily I didn't crash. Surprisingly the tire took a lot of meat off my knee. I lowsided a moped going around a corner at "only" 25mph while wearing only a bathing suit and it took months to grow all my flesh back. Sometimes I think road rash is worse than broken bones. Those experiences make me pretty timid about hauling ass in shorts. |

I used to see guys jamming down Palomar Mountain and Montezuma's Grade all the time, but I never saw them passing motorcycles

Can't find the clip now, but in the latest Mash movie one of those dudes did a wacko descent on something like 59-14. It was pretty fast.

You must be familiar with San Diego. Did you live here?
A (cat1) teammate of mine has the KOM for Montezuma - pretty impressive. What an amazing save! You're lucky; that could have been very nasty. I've had several bad downhill crashes and so I don't bomb hills the way that I used to anymore. I'll rarely exceed 40 mph on a long decent these days. |
Cool stuff SquidPuppet. Where those farms and ranches used to be is now a gigantic suburb called Bressi Ranch. It was open space when I was growing up, when they still had the Carlsbad Raceway. I had no idea you had so much history in the area.

I have motorpaced on both the road and track, but only behind a motorcycle with a driver that I know and trust. Never behind a stranger, especially if uninvited. Nowadays, I don't even join pacelines with strangers. My 70 y/o body doesn't heal very quickly anymore.

I get nervous going 40 down a hill. I'd probably poop my pants going that fast.
|
Nice. My personal record is 47mph in town here in Arlington. I find a certain satisfaction any time I can pass up the automobile traffic. You get going that fast and you find yourself having an earnest discussion with Jesus about bicycle brakes...
