What's the rubber thingie by the rear hub?

its actually leather. Its a hub polisher. A lot of older bikes had them. Its just a leather loop that is looped over the hub. The Leather rubs against the hub constantly and keeps them polished like new...

I had an old bike of my mom's from the 60's that I dug out of my parents' basement last year..The hubs were as shiny as new Phil Woods...

I grew up on a bike very much like that one.
It went anywhere, never failed. Tires lasted forever.
Hmmm.....I forget why I'm not riding it today.

i have six of those chain rings on my wall...

See if the lbs has some takeoffs . I personally would get a better sprung saddle but would not go with an unsprung.
