Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Here's a thought, @steve-in-kville: There are a couple of good tire offerings in 26"x1.25" (Compass being one of them.) Just as people convert 700C bikes to 650B, you could take a frame designed for 650C, put in 26" wheels, and switch to brake calipers with the extra 6mm reach needed for the new rims if the stock ones won't do it. By my math, a 26"x1.25" tire would have roughly the same diameter as a 650x28C.

(Sorry about mixing up tire systems above, I started with ISO and decided to go back to the more common ones.)

Thanks for the help guys. Being on the shorter side has gotten frustrating when it comes to bikes. I even asked a question over on the LD/Rando forum about dynos, as I may take this route. Sounds like I will need to have a new front wheel built right off if I want to use that type of a charging system.

You might also look into Terry-style bikes. They have a lot of experience with using smaller front wheels to avoid geometry problems with shorter riders.

You can just do what I do...and ride 700c rear/650c front.

Hey guys! New to fixed gear, and like the OP I am a shorter ride as well. I just picked up the Fuji Track Classic 650, and really enjoy it!

That Wabi Lightning on eBay seems a bit fishy to me. I don't quite buy in to the story that it was donated to the thrift store. Anyway, it's missing the saddle and front brake plus looks a bit scraped up, so I don't know if I'd pay over $400 for it. It also lacks bottle cage bosses on the seat tube, so I'd still pay a bit more for a new 650c Wabi Classic.

Thanks for the heads up, guys. Me and ebay have a bitter-sweet relationship right now. I sell a lot on there and as of late about 1 in 5 sales are never completed. Buyers just flake out and disappear or ask me cancel the sale.

And the kicker? Its near impossible to post negative feedback!!

I generally don't even look at items that don't have a "Buy It Now" price. The whole bidding thing is so boring and annoying.

Perhaps, but it's the only way to get a good deal.

That's too soon. I go with less than 5 seconds.

I do BIN's on some higher priced stuff, but its been a long time since anyone has taken me up on it. Whats amusing is that once someone bids, the BIN option is gone. And the auction ends higher than the BIN price was anyway!

Doesn't really matter to me.
