Sandblasting/Powdercoating
I want to have a chromed steel frame powdercoated. The powdercoater I talked to told me that powdercoat wont adhere to chrome very well and that sandblasting chrome is out of the question. Has anyone ever head either of these things? Any suggestions?

You're pretty much SOL on this one. You could always get the bike painted instead...

can you paint over chrome? Why is sandblasting chrome a no-no?
|
to liquid paint chrome i know you have to apply a self etching primer before your color. that primer has a sort of acid in it that slightly eats into the chrome and roughs it up so the primer will stick to it. perhaps they can do that before powdercoating it? i think powdercoating only goes to 320ish degrees. i would imagine most primers could handle that temp.

Yes, you can paint over chrome, but as the powdercoating professionals instructed you, you can't powdercoat over it very well. Talk to a paint shop. I think a light sanding followed by a self etching primer will prepare the surface well for paint.

My powdercoat guy told me powdercoating over chrome is possible, with the proper surface prep. You might want to shop around for a second or third opinion.

Guys , there is two kinds of Chrome on a bike . one is a bike that is fully chrome and will never have paint on it..IE:old Atala. The other is a frame that has been painted and chrome underneath it. it is not highly polished or anything else.
The latter may work since it was aleady prep for painting already. I want to do the same with my Keirin frame ( the paint stripped off by Keirin rider already). S/F, CEYA! |
