hi everyone -- a very close friend of many ppl i know was killed on sunday night while riding back into brooklyn after work. some ppl may remember her as the really cute and sweet hostess at red bamboo. i didn't know her very well but this news has really affected me and i wanted to share with everyone her beautiful life.

here's a link to the story:

This kind of **** pisses me off. ****in NYC is supposed to be so cutting edge and futuristic yet we don't have **** when it comes to bike lanes like other cities do. Riding out there is like risking your life everytime. Really sad, time to just start painting our own bikes lanes.

That's terrible. I got goosebumps reading some of those comments on her myspace page. She sounded like a great person. My condolences go out to her family and friends.

I think that it is really weird that the newspaper never reports the details of the accidents when there is a biker involved.

A sad day. Makes me think of when Mary from stereolab was killed in london. I believe that she was also hit by a garbage truck. People need to pay more attention.

First, I am sad. Then, angry - so angry. NYC gov is always whining why they have to raise train fares and property taxes and yet they could simply wipe out all the debt if they merely inforced traffic infringements with extreme penalties. Run a red light, that will cost you a grand. Run a red light in a comercial truck (or a hummer) 2 grand. Illegal left turn, better cash in your BMW cuz if I ran the city it would cost you big. And yeah, wtf - bike lanes. What is so hard about having bike lanes? Let's face it, nyc is anti bike. Always has been, always will be. I wish I could leave, but now I am stuck here for two more years. Damn Grad school.

I keep coming back to her page... https://www.myspace.com/brandeleen
... and it makes me so sad... this was a beautiful, vibrant, happy young woman, with a lot of friends who adored her... and she is gone.
My heart goes out to her family, her friends and all those who had the chance to meet her... she seemed like a fantastic person.
I never thought I could ever be this sad over the passing of someone I didn't even know existed an hour ago...

i only know a little bit about her background but i can tell you all she was 21, from vancouver, vegan & christian and enjoyed snowboarding.

a lot of her friends are vegan bike kids and messengers and i think she may have been on a fix borrowed from someone (this is pure speculation on my part, btw)...

just realized that the RIDE OF SILENCE is next week... i really wish it could be less poignant.

RIDE OF SILENCE

On May 18, the Ride of Silence will roll across the country, starting at 7:00 PM. In more than 50 cities in the U.S. and Canada, cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Join cyclists nationwide in a silent slow-paced ride (max. 12 mph) in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on America's public roadways.

To HONOR those who have been injured or killed
To RAISE AWARENESS that we are here
To ask that we all SHARE THE ROAD
THE RIDE OF SILENCE WILL NOT BE QUIET

The Ride Of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph and remain silent during the ride. There is no brochure, no sponsors, no registration fees and no t-shirt. The ride, which is being held during Bike Safety month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The ride is also a chance to show respect for those who have been killed or injured.

May 18, 2005 at 7:00 pm
@ In more than 50 cities across the U.S.A. but none registered for NYC yet

i've looked at this post about 15 times throughout the day today, not really knowing what to say. it makes me sick, i can only imagine what her family and friends are going through. i've read the post about torrin the same number of times today, thinking the same thing. one word about bike lanes, at least from my perspective being from a city with a "few" bike lanes, idiots in cars will still yap on their cell phones and meander into the lane, park in the bike lanes, cut in front of you at lights even when you're IN the bike lane, and do the general ignorant, dangerous things these jerks do in cars. plus, if its a city like atlanta, the bike lanes end up being the dumping ground for glass, rocks, nails, various oddball construction sink holes. i'm sick of hearing about things like this.
