Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Back to the single (speed) life

Was cruising around lynnwood yesterday on my district and decided to pop my head into performance bicycle. Found a neat little Schwinn Willy in my size on sale, only $75! I couldn't pass that up, and I love how it rides, so I'm back to riding a single speed around! Yes, it's HiTen steel, and yes, it's got a coaster, but I like it. It's comfy to ride and simple.

I had to look that up, and that looks like easily more than $75 worth of fun.

Nice find! I'd have snatched that up in an instant, too.

Actually, a few years back I did buy a similar model at Performance at great discount. It's a Schwinn "Sid", with the Shamano Coasting system. Automatic three speed with a coaster brake. It was marked down to $199. The unique electronic shifting system that runs off a dyno-hub, and Candy Red paint was just too much for me to pass up at that price.

Enjoy your new bike!

They connected the seat stays to the seat tube/top tube the same way they did in the 60s and 70s. Well, the process is different but they made it look the same. Cool.

That, plus the font and faux-steel stem help make it look like an authentic Schwinn.
