Good thread.

If it's a steel frame and the dent is small enough that you'd ask, then odds are great that is won't matter for 10s of thousands of miles.

Simple dents in steel frames are very common, with one of the most common causes being a handlebar impact when the front wheel turns in a crash. The only serious consideration is the damage to the owner's pride, and BITD it was common to do whatever was needed to hide the damage, then see a hypnotist so you could forget about it.

Of course I can't say anything for sure without at least seeing a good photo of the damage, but unless this dent is deep, with some buckling of the tube, you've got plenty of time to fret over it.

Make another dent the same size, on the other side of the tube. As long as it's symmetrical, you'll be fine.

Post a picture, I'll tell you if the frame will explode or not.

How could you put a dent on steel frame in the first place?

I used to have Hi-ten frame bike that used to crashes a lot from stupid crash to got left hooked by car and its not even have single dent . . . despite its made from Hi-ten which is weaker than chormoly steel, I actually impressed (sadly, I sold it, I loved it though)

That's exactly the reason better frames are more likely to get dented. The benefit of better alloys is that it takes less material to build an equally strong frame. Less steel means thinner walled tubing, and a greater likelihood of denting.
