Japan, Keirin, NJS, Tomity... Thanks, Ceya!

Ceya is the real deal folks. We are here in Tokyo having a ball scoring Kerin stuff. He helped me find a Level frame, plus a NJS headset, bars, and stem. Without his knowlege of track bikes and Japan, I would have honestly came home empty handed. On Sunday, we are meeting at Tachikawa Velodrome to take a few laps with the one and only Tommity-san as a pacer. How cool is that? Thanks again, Ceya! Do not worry, I am sure the frame will be a good fit.

Yeah, Tommity sent me an email about it today. I told him I was going to come with you cause I don't have the slightest clue how to get there from Tachikawa eki. We should check out this place before you leave https://www7.plala.or.jp/cpswakatsuki/
Tommity gave me this link. Said he was his friend. It is in the Kanagawa pref. near Tokyo, wherever that is.
He also gave me this link for translation https://babelfish.altavista.com/

This was the best time I had in years! My old injuries freaking killing me but it was all worth every second.

Tomity is the Man! He set us up nice and being one of the first non japanese to be part of this program was cool.

We watch high school track races as well as amateur races before our lovely class. I went to the beginning class since it has been awhile and it never hurt to start again correctly.

Wearing those helmets was awesome they fit very well and you cant notice you have it on. I know pics Alex or Tomity will post them.

We did standing start Kilo time trials. Id sucked but had a respectable time. Keirin bikes EVERYWHERE as well as carbon and other exotic frames. They gave us the TOP of the line respect and it was professional 100 plus%.

Thanks Tomity for giving us the chance to ride on a keirin velodrome and for hosting a AWESOME DAY!!

I feel like I've come into this story in the middle.
Can someone give me a link to a background thread, if one exists?
This sounds fascinating.

Ken,

I am in Nippon. I met Fit24hrs and girlfriend at a bike shop, helped him get a keirin frame and parts. I showed him around to other shops and Tomity invited us to watch and participate at Tachikawa velodrome. I explain frame sizing ,parts, tatics, racing ,messengering etc.

In short.

Tomity posted a few picks in the track forum (he's posting what's sort of like a diary with photos there regularly) but I don't know if the most recent is of Ceya. Is that you Ceya? More photos please.

Hanging out with Tomity and Ceya at Tachikawa velodrome was so far the highlight of my trip! I have tons of pics but I cant upload on this computer, cant even figure out how to apostrophe on this keyboard. Youll have to wait for Tomity or till I get home on the 15th. We got to go underground into the racers area in the velodrome and KEIRIN BIKES EVERYWHERE! They were handing them out like ice skates in a ice rink. They mustve thought we were so weird ogling over all the old frames and NJS components. Anyway, we did a few practice laps and then a 1 km time trial. I must say, I am pretty impressed with Ceya. He is xxx bigger than me AND has a bumb knee and still posted a faster time. I guess experience counts a lot. An experience of a lifetime and it only cost us 200 yen, 2 US dollars, for insurance. Tomity and a couple other Keirin coaches hold this open event at Tachikawa velodrome every month for those interested in pista racing so if you take a trip to Japan, plan accordingly.
Let me tell you, Tomity is a really outstanding character. Very big heart and creative mind. He took care of us like we were pro racers from abroad. Ceya will concure, we are all very lucky to have him, a pro Keirin racer, so active in informing us gaijin about Japanese pista racing. If any of you go to Japan, go out of your way to at least introduce yourself to him.
I know you folks are mainly interested in pics so hang tight. Ill post a few of them as soon as I can. BTW, you can get use Keirin frames for cheap in every Tokyo city. Well, no, not really. But if any of you are looking for a custom frame, I suggest having one of these Keirin builders build you one. NJS parts can be had here a little easier than in the states though. If you are hunting for used frames, you will have to work harder. I hear they are getting less and less common.

Nobody ever gives a good answer to this question because there isn't one. Keirin frames come in a range of detail and finish, a range of rareness, a range of condition. Thus there will be a range of prices. You can have a new one custom built for not much more than US$1000, which is what I did when I was over there earlier this month.

if it's not too much trouble, jrowedc, i have a few questions for you: which frame builder? what kind of tubing is your frame constructed of? geometry? how long did the build take, from start to finish?

oh yeah, too, pics!
