Freewheel tool plus flat wrench

Do I need flat wrenches (unsure of proper term) to remove the ring nut on a single speed freewheel or can I use normal chrome (slightly thicker) wrenches?
Also there seem to be many different types of freewheel tools. What's the correct one for a road bike?

SS require a special tool based on the type of freewheel you have -- Take a pic and post it. It should be something like this that you need.

Are you trying to remove the freewheel from the hub or service the mechanism inside the freewheel?

To remove the freewheel from the hub, you need the tool specific to your brand and model of freewheel. Some inexpensive single freewheels are not designed to be removed, and must be disassembled and destructively removed. What do you have?
