Value of this bike(?):
I’m pretty new to single speeds/messenger bikes, but raced some track in college. I went to a few shops in Chicago and was quoted between $500-$600 for a descent single speed, older steel frame with ok wheels. So, I got this bike on ebay. Any idea if a single speed from a LBS would be worth $400-500 more than this? https://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

Would a new bike from a LBS be "worth more"? Probably, things are worth what people will pay for them, and track bikes are big right now.
That being said, there's nothing wrong with used bikes.
Possible issues:
The 27" rims will be hard to find tires for, the QR skewers will suck if you ever decide to go fixed, and you'll probably want to re-pack the BB, but nothing really screams "you got screwed". I mean, you only paid $80.
Nice score.

Nice, thanks for the replies. $500-600 was for used frame bikes w/ asorted parts. The guy is going to repack the wheels for me, so that's pretty cool. What type of handlebars would you guys go with? I've never commuted on a single speed before, but thought some tt bars would nice. I have much better pictures of the bike than the ones on ebay, if i could figure out how put them on here.

yeah, this looks like a pretty great deal. you can get screwed buying a used frame with ****ty cheap components if you're going fixed (just ask me), but for singlespeed, there's absolutely no good reason to spend even close to that much freaking dough.
if that bike was being shipped to my house, i'd probably keep the bars it has. love my flipped/chopped drops though... everyone has their own preference.

Yah, I went there. I didn't want to spend $500 on something that could potentially get stolen, though.

$500-600? Please. You could get a new bike for that much.
If this bike works out, I'd say you made the right decision.

Dude that bike is pretty ill. I think on CL in Boston it would be at least over $200. A little work and some pedals it will be worth something. I would definitely keep it and ride it!

Looks sweet. Awesome snag. I like the flat bars.
