jasco paint stripper is an extremely powerful chemical.
i used it to strip my chrome pista and the tubes haven't
disintegrated...yet.

for sanding if you can't get powertools get a sanding
sponge. better than sandpaper.

wear a mask.

if you're willing to totally disassemble the bike (inc BB and HS) it's pretty easy. At the very least take the wheels and chain off for good access to the hard to clean parts.

I use wd40 to dissolve grease and oils and then one of those orange cleaners to remove the wd 40, then rinse and or towel. use a toothbrush to scour the built up crud, try to avoid abrasives as even those green scochbrite pads will scratch a shiny paint job.

To clean rusted/tarnished chrome, I used fine steel wool and metal polish to remove all the rust and put a nice shine on the chrome.
This works well for chrome, probably bot so good with paint.

I'm going to strip her down to nothing then build her back up. Fine steel wool on the chrome is good. For the paint I want to preserve it as best as possible without doing anymore damage.

Just a heads up. I heard that steel wool on crome is bad. From what I heard it can start rust in the crevases (sp?) of the chrome. I used a crome polishing rag desinged for dishes. Worked very well.

Don't use steel wool, go with something like Mother's Mag Polish for the chrome.

Chrome cleaner, bronze wool and tongue depressors. Or if you want to drop some cash:

Mayo - I heard you were in the shop today, sorry - I would have come up front but I was working on a couple things that needed to be finished pronto. Mike who works there told me about the bike though - sounds awesome!
