Moving to Chicago

I am moving to Chicago! The company I am currently working for (based in Detroit) has a location in Chicago but since there is no room for me there they are having me work from home.

Lunch time bike rides here I come!

Everyone from Chicago make friends with me here.

How are Chicago CM's? About how many turn out in the warmer months?

Chicago can't be any hotter than the summer I spent in New York.

You know what I missed. When you ass a subway entrance and it feels cool & inviting. Ah, it's back!

And when you're riding down the street when it's 90 and you pass a CTA bus. It feels like you're inside an oven. <3

The only thing that makes me jealous of D-Town is it's proximity to Windsor. Oh, that million dollar club......

48x16 06-07-05 01:31 PM

I've lived in Chicago so I am very familiar with the city.
Is there a park where fixie riders meet daily or weekly afetr work or anything? Just to shoot the **** and go for a ride or anything? I know in New York there is a group of messengers and posengers that meet in central park on Saturdays to trade/sell parts to each other and ride a bit...

millenium
2pm sundays
right after velosunday and handlebar l/brunches.

absntr 06-07-05 02:16 PM

Handlebar is a good spot for meeting fellow cyclists. http://www.handlebarchicago.com

Also Cal's - an unofficial "messenger" bar downtown.

Wicker Park has its gluttony of fixie riding girls and boys.

And then there's the DCC. We organize rides every so often. But now we're track obsessed. At least some of us are.

48x16 06-07-05 02:45 PM

I've been to the handlebar. Nice spot.
Once I get settled in (not for a couple of months) i'll make another post and meet up with some of you!

After riding geared for a few weeks, that's exactly what I'm sayin'. Boring as sh*t, then when I get on the track bike it doesn't recognize me anymore and tries to buck me off.

absntr 06-07-05 04:32 PM

The road bike is a willing and giving lover, ready to forgive you for your sins.

The track bike is a hellcat with fire in her eyes and a burning passion ready to move on if you're not.

Zurich 06-07-05 07:49 PM

Anyone know a cheaper way to get on the velo than the $40 it costs to rent a bike!?! At the Major Taylor velo in Indy, it's free to check out bikes...what's the deal?

pitboss 06-07-05 09:44 PM

bikes are like toast.

you just gotta know how to butter 'em.

In addition to riding fixed (95% of the time) I also ride a touring bike. The idea of fixed gear touring is stupid to me. When I go on rides that are over 40 miles and I'm wearing lycra/a jersey I'll bust out the touring bike. Like this Saturday I am leaving for a 7 day, 450 mile ride from Detroit to Mackinaw City, Michigan. When I get back my track bike won't recognize me and will probably try to kill me on the first ride.

raygunner 06-08-05 02:08 PM

Folks who claim to go 100 miles on a fixed gear = stupid. Doing it right = priceless
