Front Wheel Axle help
 

I need help finding a new front wheel axle like this one:

My LBS sells them for 25$ and I see them on ebay for cheap. I'd really appreciate it if someone can link me a cheaper one.

Edit: Ok, so apparently I can't post any links yet. The axle is your basic cup and cone, and the cone has a rubber ring on the tip.

Oh right, my bad. The axle is 5 7/8 inches, the cone is 9/16, and the nut is 11/16

What is the brand and model of the hub? The curved bearing surfaces are different on many cones?

What is the axle diameter? 9mm, or 3/8 inch, or 10mm?

These are the things that can help us identify what will work for you.

Sorry, I don't know the model, but it's a Formula hub "High Flange Alloy, 32H, Rubber Contact". I went on the Formula website but I couldn't find it. The axle diameter is exactly 5 7/8 inches long, the cone head( in the order of how it appears on the link you posted) is 15mm top to bottom, and 13mm across.

5-7/8 inch is the length of the axle, not the diameter. The diameter is the "thickness" for lack of better term. It will probably be 3/8 inch (which is sometimes called 9.5mm) or it will be 9mm. Gotta know for sure because they are not interchangeable.

You're absolutely right, it is exactly 9mm.

Why not just support your LBS and be done with the whole axle situation. You can waste time and energy on this to save a couple of dollars, and that's even if you end up getting the right set-up. You'll still end up paying shipping on top of the purchase price. You can have your axle today, or you can save $10 dollars and because you don't know what you're looking for, maybe have the right part 2 weeks from now.

Knowledge, peace of mind, service. That's the value that an LBS gives you. I'd pay a little extra for that. Hell, if people just keep taking shots in the dark with FleaBay, then soon the LBS won't be there when you need it.

Absolutely agree. Let someone that knows what they are doing get the right axle for you instead of taking a total shot in the dark on eBay or a forum. Not that people here don't know, but seriously, keep your LBS in business for stuff like this.

I dunno - it's a Formula hub.....if he wants to learn on the cheap, measure, order, install. Four days and additional time for errors. But, I have more than one whip.

Most LBS aren't try to rip you off, they are trying to stay in business.

If you need just the axle or just a cone, $25.00 is a rip-off. But if your local shop is quoting you for an axle and two cones, that's actually a good deal. Plus they will match the parts up and be responsible if the parts don't fit properly.

And they're much less likely to bungle the installation.

I assumed 25 was for parts only. If it's parts and labor, then LBS all the way.
