Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Dublin cyclists? do they exist.......

A kid from PDX looking to transplant to Dublin for awhile was curious if any have experience in riding there and or actually live around there?

From what Ive managed to read its fledgling but there are motions by the city to make it more bike friendly. Im going over there to chase tech jobs, and to get a break from american reality. Any info about city countryside riding and even (the dirty word) theft and bike laws would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

I have been to Ireland several times and have ridden there, but don't know much about the current bike situation. I met lots of people on bike tours when I was there, so its popular. Some of the roads out in the country can be sketchy for a road bike, so I am positive that once you get there (Dublin is the biggest city on the Island) you will be able to ask around.

Have fun!!!

I haven't ridden there, but loads of my family live there. One of my mates was a courier in Dublin and there are some guys who run fixies there. Don't know what it's like compared to where you are, but doubt it will be much different from any city (and prob much better than New York or London). Don't forget that everyone drives on the other side of the road compared to America!

The countryside is quite good for cycle touring and there are some amazing places close to Dublin. However, lot of the roads are small, windy and with big hedges and some of the driving is interesting so it could feel a bit sketchy.

I am sure you will have a fantastic time - Ireland is full of friendly people and Dublin is pretty buzzing.
