Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

You're right about that, but I'd hope that OP (and everyone else) is savvy with their purchases. If OP does his/her research, then I think they can get manage

I don't have any experience with China carbon but I have been eying it for some time now. A lot of the anecdotal evidence of Chinese carbon (at least frames) seems to flip flop tho so I really can't tell.

Though I think you make some good points on the street use though.

i already have some black omniums and I’ll probably run shimano 105 pedals. I want carbon for the road feel mostly and lightness but I don’t need the big bucks lightness just something lighter and more comfy than my trek steel and an aluminum bianchi
Simply adding a carbon fork to your existing frames will make a world of difference, especially your steel trek. With your budget you could also get carbon seatposts, railed saddles, and handlebars. Later down the road, if you come across a frame you like you'll then have some higher quality components to throw on it than would probably come on a budget carbon model.

earlier this year I waited to long to buy a Chinese frame when it went for for around 700 blank, now it is no longer available because it is 3000 and has a sticker on it. happens fairly common, it is surprising how often i would see carbon frames on dealer sites and recognize them from alibaba.
