Nyc Alleycats At Night?

So, the general consensus I was getting from a lot of people is that they would be able to do something like this on the weekend. If anyone is still interested in the idea of this I think a couple of us should get together to plan it out. I am open to whatever suggestions people might have. Anything to make this work. All those interested need only reply. Sunday would be a great time to meet, as saturday I will be in philly for the rocky 3.

i don't want the zero replies so far to discourage you from organizing this. i think there's plenty of interest. i also think that your impression of the general consensus is correct: you'll get a small turnout unless you stage this on the weekend. I'd be willing to do it during the week, but it would very dependent on what kind of mood i was in (i.e. cheerful and uncaring about sacrificing lots of sleep and feeling like crap at work the next day). Msngr mentioned this to me and brought up concern about (if this were on the weekend) participants being drunk/high/whatever and getting hurt or hurting other people (peds, drivers). Then there is the concern of wasted drivers and pedestrians hurting riders. It is friday/saturday night in NYC after all. There are many people driving loaded at unsafe speeds. This is true of any night in any city, but particularly on the weekend. Perhaps this is an attractive feature to some. Not me. If you want a hand in planning or other input, I am game. Keep your momentum on this going!

what time at night? early evening where it's still traffic but dark? or late evening/early morning where is dark and hardly any cars on the street but barreling down the street at near light speeds? either way, I think weekends are good cuz most people are able to show up. I'd be up for a night alleycat.

the european messengers do this right. start your alleycats at approx. 21.00h, make 'em not too long (90min or so) then have after party at bar-o'clock.

Thank you. I could not agree more about extra risk of riding on the weekend. That has been my only main concern. Obviously for what the race is, yeah some people would be psyched over that added danger. The other option is to try and do a sunday night alleycat(starting at 11 or 12), sundays tend to be a lot tamer, and we could do it around those times, so it won't be such a sacrifice on sleep. Do you want to try, and meet up sunday afternoon?

(wangster)Still trying to workout a good time, and what portion of the weekend this could happen on. Ideally it would be nice to try 2 alleycats. One during the week for those who don't care about sleep, or who don't work early hours, and the seconde for the weekend for those who can't do th week. Let me know if you would be interested in meeting up sunday afternoon?

i think say, starting at pp and riding the loop and then riding to central park and doing the loop and then finishing at some bar or location would be fun. a little different than the usual alley cat, but you could throw some location stuff in the mix...

(dirty cookie)That sounds cool. It's different, but doing something like that could keep it fun. Interested in meeting up sunday afternoon. Tryin to get people together to talk about this, in person. I have no patience for typing.

sure. where you thinking about meetin up? (having a good portion of the racing in the park would make it safer than the racing being on the streets...perhaps)

i don't know... this sounds less like an alleycat and more like a... ride. which is fine. but alleycats are sort of meant to be chaotic by nature, with no set route and lots of fun **** to do at checkpoints. maybe i'm just cranky.

well, i'm sure we can set something up where there are still checkpoints along the way. The only set route is the parks and thats still up to the individual, i'm sure you can cut across the woods if you really wanna win.

I think your cranky. There will still be much improvisation here. I'm definetly feelin the park routes, and perhaps toss 1 or 2 checkpoints in there as well. I don't know, this is why I would like people to get together talk about it. Ya down?

can you guys get this together in time for the CMWC? that'd be cool.

you'd need to get flyers printed and post here, messengers.org, and nybma.com, etc.

why not do a combination of the two...have checkpoints like a regular alleycat, but just make sure that there is at least one in both prospect ad central park...or you could even do it so that every checkpoint is in a different park...there are certainly enough parks between prospect and central to make for a good ride...though prospect and central are the only ones you can actualy ride in

anyway...it sounds like it should be an interesting race...i have never ridden an alleycat before due to a chaotic work schedule and bad timing, but this one sounds like it should shape up to be fun...hopefully enough advance notice will mean i can participate

sorry to be such a bastard before. definitely put a checkpoint on a bridge, too. this is an NYC alleycat staple.

Check back to your earlier thread where it was recently discussed - there's clearly interest in this, and good pointers there too.

I keep seeing mentions of brooklyn and manhattan, parks, bars, weekends, chaos etc.

Why not make it on a fri/sat eve and have it run from park to park?
Start at PP in brooklyn - thread your way into & thru manhattan hitting checkpoints at bars, etc - end up somewhere in CP, or make the finish at a spot way back downtown, where you show up and "surprise them with the victory cry". maybe it might run better going from manhattan-->brooklyn...

[pre-emptive edit in response to the simpsons reference below: "It's tryna bring us love, break its legs!" ]

in reference to the "other thread", can the glowing frisbee players in the park somehow be a checkpoint? i have no idea what slivoid is talking about, but does this remind anyone else of that simpson's episode where mr. burns is a glowing alien ("i come in love, i come in peace")?

umm...yeah.

maybe even a 'brooklyn only' race could be good if you're worried about safety... i personally hate riding through downtown manhattan on friday night - it's fulla drunk buttholes from jersey in tinted-window SUVs (sorry, NJ - but you know it to be true).

that simpsons reference is hi-larious. wassup, chombo? ain't seen you in a while.

I'm taking note of all these suggestions, and trying to figure out which type of alleycat can be done first. Either way is does not matter, it will be great fun. As to having a alleycat set-up by the weekend of the worlds is a slim chance. There will be so much going on it will be a crazy weekend. Might wait till after the worlds when evryone is rested from the craziness. At this point if we push for an alleycat on the weekend, it should be on sunday night, people can rest sunday(if necessary), and make it like a 90min ride. This way if traffic won't be as much of an issue. Obviously nothing is set in stone.
