Favorite grips for risers?

Looking for some new riser grips. Anyone got favorites? Thinking maybe the silicon/foam ones.

I'm a fan of the MKE brand grips from Ben's Cycle. They're comfy, longer than average, and cheap.

ODI longneck grips are the best in the world. Also I would go with Animal grips, Fly grips, Cult grips, Fit, and Fiend. But ODI makes XL grips which are like double in length in any color.

I like ODI lock on grips but they are so short. I've used various BMX grips but they seem thinner. Might try those cult x vans grips.

Edit: The Cult Ricany look nice too, 160mm and have a some sort of compression plug at the end.

There are many good lock-on MTB grips that work well. Choose according to your personal preference of color and texture. I have a set of Palmdale grips from Santa Cruz that are really nice.

I also like ESI dense foam slip-ons. They come in 2 or 3 thicknesses. For me, they were fairly easy to install and they do not slip.

Re-read my first comment. You will see that ODI makes XL grips which are like double in length.

i despise grips with a flange, and the flangeless model is only 135mm unless I’m mistaken

suppose the flanges could be cut off but the picany grips look nicer anyway

His signature grips look almost the same but ODI's are better quality grips. The XL grips are 225mm in length and come in more colors and yes you can cut the flange off. I guess lock on grips have their advantages too like riding in the rain your lock on grips won't move. With non-lock-on grips you can stretch them to make them longer to and use hair spray to make them stick to your bars and never move. I know lizard skins make really good lock ons. I see a lot of people wrap their risers with bar tape and it looks really nice. You could even double wrap them with bar tape of you want to have a lot of comfort.

ESI Extra Chunky. Comfy, good grip, don't get sticky and melt in your hands all summer. Only issue is the colors. The black ones are more like a dark grey and the rest are meh. Still, I rock them on both of my bikes with risers.

I've got the ODI longnecks now. They are soft and grippy but the small diameter and softness sort of bottoms out sometimes so it feels like you are grabbing the bars directly if that makes sense.

The longer version of the ODI's isn't the same rubber compound. It feels much less soft and sticky. More plastic like, less rubber. Don't know why this is.

Maybe try the Picany's (seem to be slightly larger diameter) or the EFI's.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I really like the ESI Chunky grips

Gresp15C 09-14-18 08:21 PM

I've tried the swoopy grips that are supposed to spread out the load, and they weren't any more comfy. These are my faves, though I don't have the courage to get the purple ones.

Of course the grips on my 1982 Schwinn are the best, but they're irreplaceable.

Got some ESI regular Chunky. So far so good. Nice cushioning but not too much. Whoever posted that the black isn't really black is dead on. Wish they were more black.

The isotropic alcohol method of putting them on gives you precious little working time but it works. Next time going to do a little soap instead. They really stick to the bars like crazy and if you're halfway through and the alcohol dries up you're sorta SOL.

I use ODI Rogue lock-on on my MTB and they're great

zubes5280 09-24-18 01:59 PM

I used track grips so I can vary the width of my hand position. Most folks find these super uncomfortable though.

Yoshida Champ track grips

nightfly 09-25-18 03:09 PM

Didn't realize it but you can get the ESI Chunky or Extra Chunky grips in long 6.75" or extra long 8.25" varieties.

I just got a pair of the ESI Chunky grips. I’ve used WD40 before to install Oury grips, which provides good lubrication for installation, but then dries out to secure the grips on the bar. Does anyone see any problem using WD40 with the ESI silicone grips ?

REDMASTA 09-29-18 03:05 PM

I've always used cheap hairspray to get my grips on. ryan_rides mentioned the same thing.

OK, so I went ahead and installed the ESI Chunky grips with WD40 no problemo. The bar plugs, however, were a pita to install and won’t stay flush with the bar so they look like crap. I think I made a mistake getting the Chunky instead of the Extra Chunky, not because they are not soft enough, but because the overall diameter is too small. They are a bit smaller OD than the Ourys that I removed, which I found were just about right, although they were not at all comfortable. The first photo I uploaded shows the old Ourys, and the last two show the ESI Chunky grips.

TejanoTrackie 09-30-18 02:49 PM

OK, so I can’t stand the crappy ESI stock plugs and just placed an order for a pair of orange anodized Fyxation alloy bar plugs. I’ve already got orange Fyxation Session tires and an orange Fyxation saddle on this bike, so the new plugs complement the theme. I may eventually replace the grips with the Extra Chunky version.

nightfly 09-30-18 03:55 PM

I like the orange.

The plugs suck. I had some nice aluminum ODI plugs that I threw in mine. I kinda need to redo one grip as it's sorta bunch up and thicker on one side than the other because the alcohol dried up too quickly. But I like the comfort of the standard ones, don't think I'd go chunky.
