Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Kissena this weekend

I want to come do the race training - it will be my first time there racing/training. Are the classes still going on? Anybody know what time it all starts or have a link to the info?

Any suggestions on gearing? I run 48x19 for street riding - I am guessing this is too small for the track.

i think you just show up at noon at the track. campo was saying that he couldn't really do the nyack rides because he had to be out at kissena by 11am, so i'm pretty sure these are still going on.

i have a cheap wheel with a 48x15 on it (like you, i don't want to mess with changing the cog on a cheap wheel). you can borrow it if you give me advanced notice. like today.

Thanks Msngr. I actually have a pretty nice double fixed rear hub, so I will just throw a 15 or 16 on the other side and flip it over. It should be fine - the posts on the track cycling forum said that the clinics were every Saturday until Sept. unless pouring rain.

blindrobert - i started going to kissena recently too. word about the gearing: 48 x 19 would be horrific. During races, I found that I was spinning out at 48 x 16. I have since then obtained a 15t cog which I haven't tried yet. I'm going to start with 15 now and try to work on my control of the bike while racing. I think a higher gear will be more appropriate soon though. Bring both cogs with you to the track (if you have em) and see what you like better.

Thanks ELC! I discovered an 50T chainwheel in my parts box - forgot about it in the move - so I will show up with 50x16 and something else...that should do for starting. Maybe I will go get a 15t cog just b/c I don't have one and I ride by trackstar everyday on my way home.

I am still waiting on the Pista Concept that I won in the raffle last month at Kissena! No new bike yet...to be fair I do need the largest size and it probably isn't easy to find. So I will be on the green Gitane - I bought a pair of Nitto bullhorns yesterday for it, but haven't put them on yet b/c this will be the only velo legal bike that I have until they come through on the Bianchi.

Yeah - believe me, I think they are tired of hearing from me at Bianchi.

Bucky was great and handed it off quickly to the distributor in CA - they are having some trouble finding one in my size. I think it would be HILARIOUS to show up and race it for the first time in 2006....when it is so clearly labeled as a 2005 bike.

Nobody was more surprised than me when I won - the only thing I have won before in a drawing was some karate lessons when I was six...and I think everybody "won" in the hopes that their parents would sign them up for more lessons.

I will post pics as soon as I get the bike. In the mean time we will all have to be content to stare at the pics on the bianchi website (sighs sadly).
